------题目------
It is the artist, not the critic,* who gives society something of lasting value.
*a person who evaluates works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc.
------正文------
When it comes to the issue of art, people would naturally think about some great artists and their lasting works, such as Mozart, Beethoven, Picasso, Monet, and so forth. While when we mention the critics, there would be only a few who can call their name. When most people think of the word "critic", they think of a person who stands aside and makes indiscreet remarks to other's works. Yet, I should say, a genuine critic could help both the artist and the audience to understand the works better. However, the role of the artists in giving something of lasting value has probably outweighed the critics. In the following discussion, I would like to present my reasons to bolster my point of view.
On the one hand, a good critic would have to provide advice and constructive criticism which could help the artist make better work. Some people would think that a critic is a person who can only give his or her individual opinion or rootless ideas without knowing anything about the works of art at all. Actually, a good critic should have learned a wide scale of knowledge. Only in this way he can give a proper evaluation to the artwork.
On the other hand, critics can help us understand and interpret art and a critic who is familiar with a particular artist and his or her works might have certain insights which layperson would not. When we encounter a piece of artwork, we could only give our opinion which is very skin-deep, we could only say ”Oh, what a good work!”, but we actually don’t know why it is good or we don’t know what the artist really want to present to us. In this sense, we really need someone who can tell us something about the art and who can let us know something deep in the art rather than merely the surface. To find examples one need look no further than the success of fantasy film "The Lord of The Rings", one of the most renowned films in the year 2004. This outstanding film, which won all 11 Oscar awards which it was nominated, is understandable to most people as a tale about an imaginative alliance of good soul battling against a frightful evil. However, with the help of the critics, we have the chance to understand that the film may be further interpreted as struggle of humans with industrialization and war.
Actually, though the critics play an important role in representing the lasting value of the art to us, it is artists who give society something of lasting value. Who can remember the name of the critic who may be famous and glittering for a period of time over a thousand of years? What people remember is the lasting works of art which help human being realize his value and cognize himself. Though some works of art could not be understood at contemporary time, they could definitely receive the honor given by their posterity. For example, Monet's famous work "Impression Sunrise" was not understood initially and even described as crazy and eerie work, since it seems peculiar for a large amount of blue used as the major color for sunlight. However, this work eventually earned its reputation and had led to the name for impressionism. Monet and other artists, with their courage and wisdom, create many outstanding works which have lasting value.
To sum up, due to the above mentioned reasons, which sometimes correlate with each other to generate an integrate whole and thus become more convincing than any single one of them, we may be comfortable to say that though critics may help the artists to improve and fulfill their skills and to help us common people better understand the works of art, it is the artist, not the critic who gives society something of lasting value.
