The study of history has value only to the extent that it is relevant to our daily lives.

The speaker has put the meaning of the history studying to an extreme extent. Exactly, the study of the history can be helpful in resolving some today's problems, but the responsibility of history research is more complex than the speaker asserts. The study of history is valuable in many aspects in spite of whether it is relevant to our daily lives.

It is true that the studying of history will help us in various respects to make decisions and find out solutions, especially in politic area. History is a mirror, which reflects the faults and the advances our ancients had made and leaves experience for us to learn from. The disasters the two World Wars had brought to our human beings give warnings to all the nations that how serious effect wars will  bring thus prevent us from the breaking of the third World War. And the unaccepted result that the two atom bombs made in Japan straightly leads to so many laws and rules which are established by the United Nation to restrict the research and the use of the atom weapons. And, the tragic happened to the Jews in German under Hitler's control warned us how mad and ridiculous a nation would become if it was autocratic and was blind with the prejudice of the racialism. The study of the history has values in giving us warnings and preventing us from making the same mistakes.

And in another aspect, studying history also has value to our daily lives when it concerns with society problems. Actually, the human natures have been changed very little in the thousands years since human has civilizations. That is, some noble characters of our history famous figures are also valuable today and deserve our modern people's study and imitate. We are familiar with the little stories about Washington and Lincoln which advice us to be tolerance or to be kind to others or to prefer giving rather than receiving. History has provide too many examples, both positive and negative, for us to learn from or avoid making same flaws.

But the meaning of the history research is not only to be relevant to our daily lives. When the study of history has come to the scientific level, and when we regard history as a subject which includes embranchments as anthropology, archaeology and paleontology and so on, the study of history has few relevant to our daily lives.
The research that explores the origin of the mankind, the discoveries of the appearance and the extinction of certain species, and the dig of the historic sites and the revelation of the culture relics has no more meaning for most people than satisfying their curiosities and enjoy. But those researches mentioned above are all invaluable for the academicians in certain fields and would be remembered and recorded for a long time.

The value of the study of history is difficult to measure. It is meaningful to our daily lives as well as to the contribution to academic researches. Both we normal people and the scholars in history area should make efforts to sustain the wilder and deeper study of history, that is, to support our now and future value as human beings.
