138. Only through mistakes can there be discovery or progress.
I concede with the speaker that mistake can bring about certain discoveries or progress. (这样的开头北美范文味很浓呀,不过有点突兀) For error and correctness are actually two sides of a coin, by preventing all mistakes amounts to postponing their accompanying progress. Moreover, mistakes show us how an invention or theory can be improved. The assertion, however, overstate the role of mistakes so much that take them as necessity for any discovery or progress.
I concede that by appreciating the importance of mistakes, the speaker is on the correct philosophic side. A cursory glance of history will reveal that no discovery is purely correct—that is in human history, any discovery always has own limitation, beyond which any maxim will devolve into fallacy. When we overcautious to keep away from mistakes, we also steer clear of great progress. After the discovery of Relativity Theory, we recognize the limitation of classic laws of physics; (总觉得这个例子不太典型,classic laws只能说认识不全,也不能称是mistake吧,觉得你有点喜欢举一些极端的例子呀,上次好像也有一次的,可以先举一些典型的,再加这一个Even什么什么的--,而且说any什么的一个例子也太少了吧)however, the mistake of classic laws in micro-world does not deny them as great discovery(太笼统了,可以说一下毕竟是一次伟大的尝试,是第一次的探索什么的,赞扬一下这种pioneer的精神), in fact, only by committing such so-called mistakes, can science get progressed.
Furthermore, by showing us the defects of original designs, mistakes indeed breed discoveries and progress. Although mistakes and certain loss always come to us hand in hand, few of us will deny that certain disadvantages can hardly be realized otherwise by an end of failure--that is mistakes serve as an effective and ultimate indicator of defects. After all, it is mistakes that inform us which way are just infeasible and how can we make further progress. Consider a telling and heartrending example of space shuttle of Columbia, whose prang is a reflection of outmoded design and defects of anti-heat system. Once the tragedy point out the defect, we make great effort and progress in the improvement of space shuttles, which actually bred the successful launch of Discovery[color=Black].(可以具体一点,具体带来了什么好处呢,如果写得详细一点会比较有说服力的)
However, mistakes are far from indispensable in the process of advancement, especially considering the possible significant loss that can be caused. Therefore we should always be meticulous of mistakes, and try hard to prevent them, which is actually possible on the basis of our accumulated knowledge and experience. (这句话改一下吧:Actually, we could be meticulous enough to prevent mistakes on the basis of our accumulated knowledge and experience.) Let us back to the example of space shuttle of Columbia, the death of seven astronauts might be prevented by an earlier improvement of anti-heat system, and the danger is not impossible to foresee. In fact, by asserting the necessity of committing mistakes, we risk encouraging imprudent actions and are likely to pay heavy expense of such adventures.
In final analysis, I concede mistakes are important indicator assisting us in finding certain defect, and when we try hard to prevent any mistakes, we actually try hard to postpone any progress, for the correctness and error is two sides of a coin. However, taking mistakes as necessity in progress, we risk encouraging destructive attempts and imprudent actions, which are likely to result in terrible loss. |
