------题目------
At various times in the geological past, many species have become extinct as a result of natural, rather than human, processes. Thus, there is no justification for society to make extraordinary efforts, especially at a great cost in money and jobs, to save endangered species.
------正文------
I concede that we should not take extraordinary efforts to preserve the endangered species, not only because many species have become extinct as a result of natural election, but also we should always place priority on the prosperity of human civilization. However, we should take certain action to prevent such ecologic tragedies insofar as that does not threaten the thriving of our society, especially considering our responsibility and obligation as the culprit of some of the extinctions.

I agree that we should not make extraordinary effort to save endangered species for three reasons. Firstly, as the speaker claims, many species become extinct due to the so-called process of natural selection, and we should not intervene with the natural process. History informs us those extinctions are resulted from the failure to adapt to the ever-changing environment rather than the misbehaviors of human beings. Further it is a rare issue that we can completely discriminate whether certain species are becoming extinct for the human reason. If so, we would find ourselves at dilemma to decide which species to protect. Finally, recognizing that we can hardly discern which species we should preserve for moral reasons, it is presumptuous for human being to play like God to decide species that should be protected according to our own preference or even arbitrary.

In the concern with the prosperity of human civilization, lies another reason why I support the speaker's claim. To ensure the thriving of human should always take precedence over other issues, which will be justified even from pure point of animal--that is we cannot talk about other species' survivals until we guarantee our owns. If it would be costly to protect the endangered species, we can not afford such high opportunity cost, for there are still myriad immediate problems our governments should focus on--such as unemployment, poverty, hunger, and so forth. How can a environmentalist give more attention to the survival of pandas than the survivals of starving peoples in Africa. That is, when there are still pressing problems in our world unaddressed, it is unjustifiable for government allocate precious public resources to the preservation of certain endangered species, especially when such extinction are caused by their own failure to adaptation.

However, when the preservation does not demand extraordinary efforts, we should take the responsibility for preservation of endangered species for another three reasons. To begin with, we are the only species that have capability to do so. Being also one kind of species, we should not just stand by to see the extinction of our other counterparts in nature. Further, our misbehavior actually contributes to certain extinction of dying species. As the culprit behind the tragedy, we ought to take responsibility to compensate such loss. Finally, we should take preservative actions when human beings' interest are at stake. For many endangered species are still not familiar to human beings, which might have distinctive value in economy or research. In that matter, the extinction of such species, can be also taken as a irreparable loss for ourselves.

In final analysis, I agree that we should not take extraordinary effort to prevent the extinction of certain endangered species, for the opportunity cost for that might be too high, and it is presumptuous for us to play like God. However, we should burden some moral responsibility to do so, especially when the interest of ourselves is at stake.
