Aside from mathematics, physics and chemic, there also exist some different areas named as nonmainstream areas, such as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits. When mainstream science endeavor to reveal objective rules hidden behind natural and social phenomena, these nonmainstream areas submerged them in satisfying people's psychological needs. So I concede that under some circumstances nonmainstream areas have their own merits. But, at the same time, we should not overstate their significance.

Admittedly, in some cases, astrology, fortune-telling and other nonmainstream areas play their unique roles in our daily life, especially in the spiritual aspect. First of all, they provide a sense of certainty and safety for people. With the development of society, uncertain factors and choices become more and more. Faced with them, some people may fear to make any choice just because they cannot determine which one is the best choice. They lack sufficient courage to accept corresponding consequence brought about by their own choice. So they simply give up this right and rely on such nonmainstream areas for guidance since they believe that their lives are under control of some supernatural powers. Besides, nonmainstream areas also provide a shelter from cruel and cold society. When technology facilitates our living, it also posed huge pressure on people. Now the living pace is so fast that all people should do their utmost to work hard, to study hard, and to live hard. If some people cannot keep up with the pace of living, they would be discarded cruelly and coldly. At this time nonmainstream areas give them a shelter. Those fails are told that they are determined by their destinies. So their failures are not because they are foolish or they have done their most, but because of outside destinies. Finally, to some extent, nonmainstream areas could comfort our injured souls. Faced with the death of loved one, most people would feel sad. But there are some people whose feeling is so bad that they must turn to nonmainstream areas to calm their souls, because these areas announce that they can fill the gap between the dead world and the living world. By the help of these areas, people can communicate with person who has gone.

Notwithstanding benefits of nonmainstream areas, their negative effect would overweigh their merits. After all, the sense provided by nonmainstream areas is false. When you make your choice under the direction of stars, it not means that this choice would be necessarily right; when you find a shelter from them, you just find a excuse for your failures which never help improve your situation; and when you think you are talking with your parents, your lover, or other person through nonmainstream areas, you are taking with a witch but not the person you have missed. What is worse, this false feeling may impede your endeavor and then damage your possible better future. You will yield to the arrangement of a fantastical destiny rather than fight against failures and sorrows. But it is just this courage but not false sense that could help you to conquer yourselves and outside environments.

Moreover, we should be aware that these nonmainstream areas stem from ignorance and the fear of the powerful nature. As long as some phenomena still cannot be explained by modern science, such as the meaning of dreams, the origin of intelligence and so forth, these nonmainstream will continuingly existed along with our mainstream science. But with the development of natural science and social science, both of our knowledge and spiritual power would increase. At that time, we would no longer need these nonmainstream areas to overcome our inherent drawbacks.

In sum, when mainstream science is not so advanced, nonmainstream areas cannot be eliminated completely. But ever their name, nonmainstream areas, can remind us that we should put much emphasis on their significance. And with the development of mainstream science, these areas would become extinct in the end.
