Should research priorities be set for improving people's lives? The speaker believes so. In this essay, I am going to confine researches within the scientific endeavor. Generally speaking, scientific researches can be divided into two categories, the practical and the theoretical. As the speaker suggests, the former is most important to our daily life. However, equal consideration should be put upon the latter.

In the first place, from a practical point of view, scientific researches focusing on improving people's lives are paramount to maintain our standard of living and solve social problems that threaten us. For instance, agricultural researches aiming at generating more corps have made it possible for the earth to sustain 6 billion people. Mechanical studies enable our assembly line be more productive, which consequently provide more goods available for us. In addition, more and more researches have been launched to address pressing social problem such as epidemics and environmental pollution. In short, it is these practical scientific researches that keep us away from hunger, shortage, diseases and other threats, and thus give us a high quality of life.

However, this is not to say that the other kind of scientific researches whose benefits are less immediate should be given lower priority, or even be neglected. Firstly, apart from its pragmatic counterpart, pure and theoretical researches are for the purpose of understanding the world we live in and quenching man's thirst for knowledge. Knowing for its own sake is valuable, because the human spirit cannot resign itself to ignorance. If researches with intention of pure knowledge pursuit are abandoned, how can we straggle to meet our intellectual curiosity? Secondly, it is the theoretical researches that form the basis for later success of the pragmatic utilizations. Real breakthroughs in science are always coming from theoretical studies, without which invention for practical use would be impossible. Take mathematics for instance. If the ancient Greek mathematicians had not devoted themselves to the investigation of conic sections zealously, it would not have been possible centuries later for people to navigate far from shore. Similarly, in physics, without Einstein’s world-famous theory of relativity and quantum theory, there would be no establishment of nuclear power plant generating huge amount of electricity to meet our daily consumption. That is to say, it is the theoretical achievements that give life to the following researches mainly considering day to day uses.

In conclusion, scientific researches that focus on practical application are necessary of our daily lives. Nevertheless, the theoretical ones with less immediate benefits should not be ignored, or even discarded. Not only because they reflect human beings’ instinct to know, but also form the solid ground where practical scientific researches can grow.

Generally speaking, scientific researches can be divided into two categories, the practical and the theoretical. As the speaker suggests, the former is most more important to our daily life. However, equal consideration should be put upon the latter.题目中直接谈到的是会有益于多少人的生活，你直接就把影响多少人的生活等同于理论和应用的研究，似乎不太好，有个小过度就自然些了，你看这样说合适不：The speaker believes in setting research priorities， the most important question to consider is how great people can benefit from the results。It seems the stress is put on the short-term interests brought by applied researches rather than the long-term interests resulted from theoretical ones。However，in my opinion， both should be taken equal consideration。

逻辑思维很严密，思路也很清晰。美中不足就是开头不够好，把讨论范围界定在科学内，虽然后面的分析大多限定在科学内，去掉科学这个词就非常好了】
