200.Statistics collected from dentists indicate that three times more men than women faint while visiting the dentist. This evidence suggests that men are more likely to be distressed about having dental work done than women are. Thus, dentists who advertise to attract patients should target the male consumer and emphasize both the effectiveness of their anesthetic techniques and the sensitivity of their staff to nervous or suffering patients.

-------------------------------------
1. the representative
2. faint doesn't necessarily results from distressed
3. not only male consumer
4. sensitivity
-----------------------------------

In the argument presented above, the speaker wants to convinced us about the need to emphasize the anesthetic techniques and the sensitivity of their staff to nervous or suffering patients, and target the male consumer, for he or she asserts that men are more likely to be distressed when cured, which is based on some statistics provided. As to me, the argument suffers from several vital fallacies which will rank its conclusion as incredible.

A threshold problem was the representative of the statistics, as all the following conclusions are all base on this information. My common sense tells me that a representative statistic must have an enough size as well as a random sample, while the speaker doesn't inform us neither of them. On the one hand, no evidence shows that the statistics are not collected from a few dentists whose clients may be limited in a small region. On the other hand, it’s also possible that the male customers have a larger rate in their clients, which makes the total percentage of men’s faint lower than that of the women, thus the conclusion drawn from the statistics would be proved unwarranted.

Secondly, even if the statistics can be applied to a large population, how can the speaker hastily assume that men suffer more distress than women? Since there might be many other causes leading to the happen of faint, other such causes including the constitution of the customers, the spiritual states as well  as the medicine they take, which may play a much more important part in it. As a result, it’s unfair to relate the faint with pain.

Finally, the speaker suggests those dentists to aim the advertising mostly on the male, which is also in absence of evidence. He neither provides any necessity of this decision nor weigh its advantages thoroughly. The most important also the basic request of an advertising is to draw the attention of all the potential customers, not a portion. Thus, without knowing the percentage of the men who are easy to faint, and the male’s percentage of the whole patients, the advertising targeted merely to male might make no sense. Further, if the patients are consisted mainly by women, it might achieve a contrary goal.

What's more, the advice to emphasis on the clerk's sensitivity is also untenable, since only sensitivity cannot solve any problem. It's quite likely that the super sensitivity of the doctor or nurse may even add to the patient's distress.

To sum up, the argument is not well presented, since it lacks both sufficient evidence and logical reasoning. To convince me of his or her point, the speaker should offer more convincible details and improve the logical structure.
