Which is playing a more significant role in society  between the non-mainstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling and the science? The speaker refers to the former. In favor of his conclusion, the author asserts that such non-mainstreams satisfy human needs that science never does. However, in my opinion, science can never be displaced by  non-mainstream in society.

I concede that non-mainstream can satisfy human needs that are not addressed by mainstream science. Those areas of inquiry usually popularize in ancient times, when human hold very little knowledge for which many phenomena are seen as supernatural. From these adornment and fear towards the nature, such non-mainstream ,as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits, were born, which just satisfy human's need of explaining the supernatural power. Human are born to have questions since they are curious about everything. If some facts can not be described and explained, they will feel fearful about themselves for life has so many variations. With the absence of science, the non-mainstream plays a role of explainer, until being replaced by science. From this point of view, those areas of inquiry really serve human.

However, after the scrutiny by science, those non-mainstreams have vital disadvantages for they have been justified to false. Unlike science, lacking of the objective facts, almost all the non-mainstreams explain the phenomena from the perspective of the dictators, even without logical deduction. Thus the conclusion will be unconvincing. Here are several examples to illustrate the faults of the non-mainstreams. As we all know, alchemy is very popular in medieval which is proved to be false because the alchemists just get some compounds like gold rather than it . At last, alchemy was abandoned for the critic facts. There is also a famous fortuneteller at that time who have made many so-called prediction actually true in human' imagination. His most noted prediction is that the earth will confront the doomsday in A.D 1999, which is proved to be a fault just in 1999. These non-mainstreams have not made any truly great achievement since then at any rate. Many so-called theories prove to be false and the remainders are just waiting their days

In addition, with the progress of science, the acceptance of non-mainstream by human will be less and less. Science has been developed so fast  especially these years, and thus solved many problems. The appearance of modern science is rather late. However, it develops so fast and blooms several times. Once the area of astronomy appears, it  rapidly replaces the astrology, which can only be popular in movies. With careful observation as objective basic, the astronomy makes many great discovers as predicting the existence of Neptune. We have enough reasons to believe that the importance of science will be more and more obvious than non-mainstreams.

In sum, although non-mainstreams satisfy the curiosity of human at first, the theories explaining exactly are more convincing and acceptable because of their scientific basis. Meanwhile, we have to concede that in some underdeveloped districts, non-mainstreams still play an important role without the generalization of science.

恩 虚心接受，本来原来的思路是把非主流学科至于反面批一顿的，可能想的偏激了，于是就强加了作者的意思:p   
把这个强加的论调个去掉就应该不偏了吧。
