41. "Such nonmainstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits play a vital role in society by satisfying human needs that are not addressed by mainstream science."
Do nonmainstream areas show their significance by satisfying human needs which are beyond mainstream’s scope? Concerning all aspects, any extreme answers are improper to the question. Basically, I must acknowledge the importance of nonmainstream areas, however, in my opinion, the nonmainstream areas did and do not always promote the development of societies by satisfying human needs, let alone the misguidance of human minds by these areas.
Admittedly, nonmainstream areas do provide human beings with complements in fields of science researches, which, usually, are blanks to mainstream researchers. And, it is equally important that the nonmainstream provide scientific and culture diversities. For example, theories of psychic and paranormal pursuits can explain some puzzles, such as the mystery Bermuda Triangle, which are still beyond mainstream scientific knowledge; and various kinds of religion multiply culture lives. In a word, without any doubt, nonmainstream areas play a vital role in society.
However, based on different definitions and limits of nonmainstream areas, they, probably, have advanced or are advancing the society by satisfying human needs. Nonmainstream areas should be those which are not authorized and have insufficient power to effect the society essentially. Thus, the nonmainstream areas yesterday would have turned to be the mainstream today, in contrary, the authorization might fall low to be heresy. Taking Copernicus’ theory of the center of the universe for example,( 哪位高人知道”日心说”的准确翻译啊,告诉俺一下) in the theocratic society, theology would be definitely mainstream science, and accordingly, Copernicus and his espousers are treated as heresies . For the high degree of mind manipulation by the theocratic system, their disciplines could not conform to the need of the public. But it is the persistence in their spirits of so-called heresy that leads modern astronomy to the right direction- earth is not the center of the universe, and the universe is a amazing infinite. Consequently, to this extent, the paramount effect nonmainstream areas of inquiry have on the society should attribute to the power of individuals’ spirits, not satisfactions of human needs.
What’s more, the nonmainstream areas of inquiry will probably misguide the public, even in the cases that they can meet people’s needs. In ancient times, with ill developed technology, nonmainstream area of inquiry human beings were not able to elucidate some natural phenomena, naturally, to explain the puzzles of the world, our ancestors originate numerous legends and idols. Granted that these legends and idols can offer people spiritual ease, but in many occasions, facing some helpless emergences, they would rely on their idols rather than scientific methods to solve problems. For instance, some patients would not turn to medical treatments for help, but witch doctors who pursued wealth by mendacious actions, and the so-called treatments would cost the patients not only possession but also their lives. So, even of spiritual ease, the nonmainstream areas of inquiry have higher fatalness of being abused.
To sum up, to judge the significance of a nonmainstream area of inquiry requires long-term analysis of its developing trend and by what means it affect the society. In addition, even acknowledge the importance of nonmainstream area of inquiry, we should not neglect the fatalness of its being abused.
