Ceremonies and rituals, the movements which people depend on to memorize the custom, religion, belief, and so forth, to some extent help define a culture. Societies and groups of people could hardly have a standard to define who they are, if there is no rituals and ceremonies. However, the rituals and ceremonies are some of the ways of to define the position of people and society, other means, like the way people behave, trends, and so on, also help to define a culture.

First of all, ceremonies and rituals are mirrors which reflect some aspects of a culture. In United States, the thanksgiving is one of the most famous ceremonies. The ceremony is celebrated for the generousness of American native Indians in the hard time when the first citizens landed on the unknown place. The thanksgiving cherishes the moment when the different races live in harmony, and delivers the peace signal to each races existing on the continent. Another day named the Memorial Day is set to memorize the soldiers who died for the honor of his country, and the rest people would learn the spirits of them through the ceremony and ritual.  

Without the ceremonies and rituals or the meanings of them, the people could hardly remember the spirits which pass down generation by generation with the form of ceremonies and rituals, and without the history they may have a diminished sense of who they are. As mentioned above, the thanksgiving is to memorize the kindness of the native Indian for the new colonizer, but as times passing by, the Indians were hunted for their huge land by the colonizers who had already forgotten the generous gifts of the Indian friends and the happiness of the different races living together. And without the Memory Day, people would forget the effort offered for the peace today, and then may be lured for the realistic profit to cause another conflict. Thus, with ceremonies and rituals, the passing by facts and precious spirits would likely not be forgotten.

Yet, ceremonies and rituals help to define a culture, but these are not sufficient to define it exactly. There are lots of other factors need to bring into consideration, such as the way people behave, trends, and so forth. The actions, dresses, altitudes, and the like, reveal the characters of people, moreover, the common characters of a group people or society mostly reveal the culture of this society. For example, France is famous for its romance because of its beautiful language, the leisure phenomena, and the people's altitudes; England characterizes itself with gentleness for the famous English gentlemen; and United States is well-known for its complicated and various cultures for the people of its coming from the world. So it is clear that except for ceremonies and rituals there are other ways to help define a culture.

To conclude, ceremonies and rituals are important aspects of present life, with them, societies or groups of people would not have a diminished sense of who they are. Meanwhile, not only have ceremonies and rituals helped to define a culture, but other aspects of life would help too.
