The way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests. You can tell much about a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people.
The speaker holds that one can tell much about a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people since external appearance reveals internal attitudes; this is an idea I also agree with.

To begin with, people in many cultures have long found the correlation between appearance and inner characters. In the case of Peking opera, a Chinese mainstream art with a history of more than 300 years, actors always make up with strong colors on their faces so that the audience can easily figure out the main character of this role. White, for example, is the symbol of duplicity, while red loyalty and black courage. No doubt in reality it is not so easy at all to judge a person by the color of his/her face; yet this form of art actually reveals in an exaggerated way people's common belief that internal personality will get its expression through external look. This belief I hold to be reasonable, for the external look, dress, and act do give some indication about people's attitudes and a society's values. To better illustrate this, we can compare people' dressing between open societies and closed ones.

In an open society, such as the present United States and West European countries, we can see people dressing in whatever styles they like. Fashion shows in New York, Paris, London, and Milan always offer a great number of new styles and never cease attracting people’s attention. Why so many people in western countries care about new and distinctive styles of clothing? Because they care about fashions not only for fashions’ sake but also in order to establish their own characters: they want to be different; they want to be themselves. For many people, characteristic wearing could easily distinguish themselves from others and shows their own personalities; while it would be quite awkward, for example, for two people sitting in the same room and wearing clothes of the same style, except that they want to show their unity intentionally or it is out of the demand of their job. It is essentially this personality pursuit that underlies the phenomenon of various dressing. On the other hand, a deeper idea of democratic societies can be also reflected, i.e., individuals' choices and values should be respected. People could choose their clothing style only when the basic rights to freely determine one’s own life and freely express one’s own taste could be warranted. And this is satisfied in democratic societies, where no authority can interrupt one's personal preference as long as it is not out of law's permission. From people’s dressing, therefore, we can not only find people’s character, but also find the basic value buried in the society.

When it comes to closed societies, e.g., North Korea and China before 1978, the situation is totally different. During the Cultural Revolution, almost every Chinese people dressed only in three colors: green, grey, and blue, with uniform designing and even the same kind of cloth. Seldom does a girl wear short skirt or a young man wear jeans, for both forms have been recognized as unsuitable in that they reflect the past fashion before the Revolution; while only the plain colors, uniform styles, and similar materials, in people's view, could show their loyalty to the communism faith and their political leaders. Hence, the tedious wearing helps reveal people’s attitudes. What is more, the society’s orientation can be also uncovered from this phenomenon. It is the authority, not individual, who decides the clothing styles; also it is first the authority that requires people to wear this style of clothes. Individual preference thus has no significance in these societies, and there could be one and only one uniform value allowed, i.e., the favorite of the authority.

In the final analysis, external appearance does help us observe a society and its people’s ideas and values, as the comparison of a democratic and a totalitarian culture shows. The basic value a society and its people hold will reveal itself everywhere; appearance and behavior are no exception either.

The speaker holds that one can tell much about a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people since external appearance reveals internal attitudes; this is an idea I also (?) agree with.

No doubt in reality it is not so easy at all to judge a person by the color of his/her face (改成expression?); yet this form of art actually reveals in an exaggerated way people's common belief that internal personality will get (不太恰当,但我也没想出好的。) its expression through external look. This belief I hold to be reasonable, for the external look, dress, and act do give some indication about people's attitudes and a society's values. To better illustrate this, we can compare people' dressing between open societies and closed
重点淡了expression反映internal personality,但没谈society’s ideas and values。

In an open society, such as the present United States and West European countries, we can see people dressing in whatever styles they like. Fashion shows in New York, Paris, London, and Milan always offer (release?) a great number of new styles and never cease attracting people’s attention Why so many people in western countries care about new and distinctive styles of clothing? Because they care about fashions not only for fashions’ sake but also in order to establish their own characters: they want to be different; 呵呵,fashion只是年轻人的事!they want to be themselves. For many people, characteristic wearing could easily distinguish themselves from others and shows their own personalities; while it would be quite awkward(比较武断! , for example, for two people sitting in the same room and wearing clothes of the same style, except that they want to show their unity intentionally or it is out of the demand of their job. It is essentially this personality pursuit that underlies the phenomenon of various dressing. On the other hand, a deeper idea of democratic societies can be also reflected, i.e., individuals' choices and values should be respected. People could choose their clothing style only when the basic rights to freely determine one’s own life and freely (删) express one’s own taste could be warranted. And this is satisfied in democratic societies, where no authority can interrupt one's personal preference as long as it is not out of law's permission. From people’s dressing, therefore, we can not only find people’s character, but also find the basic value buried (deeply rooted) in the society.

The way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests.

In the final analysis, external appearance does help us observe a society and its people’s ideas and values, as the comparison of a democratic and a totalitarian culture shows. The basic value a society and its people hold will reveal itself everywhere; appearance and behavior are no exception either.

1.open societies 应该不是很水,原出处见波谱尔 open society and its enemies
3。release
On the other hand, a deeper idea of social values can be also reflected, i.e., in these democratic countries, individuals' choices and values should be respected.
