Do non-mainstream areas of inquiry play a vital role in society? In my view, although such areas have more or less some impact on comforting people's feelings, their role in society is not vital.

It might seem tempting to agree with the speaker, on the basis that these areas can comfort our feelings. Due to the limitations of human intelligence and recognition, it would be almost impossible to predict future. As a result, faced with so many choices to make free decisions, people often fear to regret in the end, if they choose one way instead of another. In order to evade from the pressures of decision, people sometimes turn to the areas of pseudosciences for relieve, which claim to accurately predict one's fortune by watching stars, counting cards or other means. Moreover, with the knowledge that no one could live forever, most people resort to psychic and paranormal pursuits to learn about afterlife, so as to get away from the fears about death. In fact, the existence and survival of such areas along reveals the needs of our society. After all, if no one in our society needs non-mainstream areas of inquiry, they would not last for thousands of years, or even not established. Therefore, such areas of pseudoscience more or less play a role in society.

Yet it is very hard to judge the extent of influence, when such non-mainstream areas are compared with modern science. In the ancient time when science is not quite developed, we could tell that these non-mainstream areas of pseudoscience play a vital role in society, because most people's minds were tightly controlled by them. Too often we hear ancient stories that sun is a deity being, or God is staring at everyone's behavior in the world, or each person's fortune is predetermined. As a form of superstition, fortune telling, psychic and paranormal pursuits are widely used by the governor to control the minds of his citizens, so as to prevent commotion under over-exploitation. However, in modern society the impact of such areas is dramatically diminishing, because of the wide spread of formal education. With the continual science advancement, people realized that there is no deity being existing, that human beings evolved from other creatures, and that no ghost or after life exist. At least, since scientists can find no evidence of the existence of such things, or any influences and relation they have on us, it would be meaningless to believe the existence of them. Therefore, modernization has reduced the impact of pseudoscience extensively.

However, we should not expect such areas to diminish and ultimately extinct, no matter how science and education have improved. This is due to human nature. No one could claim that he is a pure intelligent machine fulfilled with strong reasoning and cogitative skills, without emotions or feelings. In that case, he would only be regarded as a super computer, not a man at all. Due to the limitations of human minds as well as the desires of relieve seeking, there would always be some people studying pseudo-psychology and attaining comforts from it. In 2002 China when the heresy of Fa Lun Gong was rampant, many university professors and even academicians were obsessed in it. Because when the irrational desire of emotional comfort is too strong, people could complete forget their reason and intellect.

In sum, the speaker is partly true. Such areas play a role in our society. But with modernization, this role is dramatically diminishing. However, due to human nature, such areas would never become extinct.
