The following appeared in a memorandum from the new president of the Patriot car manufacturing company.
'In the past, the body styles of Patriot cars have been old-fashioned, and our cars have not sold as well as have our competitors' cars. But now, since many regions in this country report rapid increases in the numbers of newly licensed drivers, we should be able to increase our share of the market by selling cars to this growing population. Thus, we should discontinue our oldest models and concentrate instead on manufacturing sporty cars. We can also improve the success of our marketing campaigns by switching our advertising to the Youth Advertising agency, which has successfully promoted the country's leading soft drink.'

The author recommends that the Patriot should discontinue the oldest models and manufacture sporty cars, and use Youth Advertising agency for its success in a soft drink. To reinforce the conclusion, the author cites the fact that the sales of this company is not as well as competitors'. And a report reveals the number of newly licensed drivers is increasing. However, the claim has several flaws as it stands.

First, the author assumes that the body styles of the cars are old-fashioned, so the sales of cars are not sold well as competitors'. But there is no evidence showed to us that the sales of the cars are better than the competitors'. Maybe the sales of the cars are increasing, but other companies' share of market is so huge that the sales are not as well as them.

Secondly, depending on a report of many regions in this country which tells that the number of newly licensed drivers is increasing, the author claims that the company should manufacture sporty cars instead of the oldest models for capture of the new market. Yet, there are several suspicious evidences let the conclusion unsubstantial. First, no evidence shows all newly licensed drivers would buy new cars. It is likely that the drivers may rent cars, or they learn just because of interest. The need of new car may not increase. Second, even if the need of new cars is increasing, there is no proof to support the assumption they would like to buy sporty cars. It may be possible that the people who learn driving are not youth, and have no interest in the sporty cars. If this situation is true, the assumption would be undermined.

Finally, the assumption switching to the Youth Advertising agency falls into a fallacy of false analogy. The success of promoting soft drink may not be suitable for the car company, because the customers of the two areas are different, and the methods of advertising are also different. There is no evidence showed the agency has the experience.

In sum, the recommendation render itself unconvincing when it stands. To strength it, the author should offer the details of Patriot’s sales, and the exact condition about the newly licensed drivers, as well as their favors. For convincing the company to shifting to Youth Advertising agency, the author should offer more information about the agency
