The following appeared in a local newspaper.
'People should not be misled by the advertising competition between Coldex and Cold-Away, both popular over-the-counter cold medications that anyone can purchase without a doctor's prescription. Each brand is accusing the other of causing some well-known, unwanted side effect: Coldex is known to contribute to existing high blood pressure and Cold-Away is known to cause drowsiness. But the choice should be clear for most health-conscious people: Cold-Away has been on the market for much longer and is used by more hospitals than is Coldex. Clearly, Cold-Away is more effective.'


In the argument, the arguer concludes that Coldex is more effective. To substantiate this conclusion, the arguer first points that Cold-Away is known to contribute to existing high blood pressure and Cold-Away is known to cause drowsiness. In addition , the arguer reasons that Cold-Away has been on the market for much longer and is used by more hospitals than is Coldex. This argument suffers form several critical fallacies.

The fact that Coldex contributes to existing high blood pressure and that Cold-Away causes drowsiness conflicts with the arguer’s assumption that Cold-Away is generally more effective. For one thing, it is true that high-blood pressure may be harmful to health, however, if people with high-blood pressure take good care of their diets ,work and rest, it will make little influence on people’s health. By contrast, drowsiness influences people’s work and study. Sometimes drowsiness may even devitalize people’s life. For example, when one is driving, drowsiness may lead to traffic accidents. For another thing, even Coldex causes worse negative effects than Cold-Away does, this only shows that Cold-Away is safer than Coldex, however, does nothing with the effects.

Additionally, the fact that Cold-Away has been on the market for much longer and is used by more hospitals says little about its effects. First, Cold-Away in the market for much longer does not necessarily mean that it is more effective than Coldex. To the contrary, according to our common sense, a new medicine is always more effective than an old one. Second, there is no relationship between more user and better effects. There are many other reasons for people and hospitals to prefer Cold-Always other than effects, for instance the cheaper price. Meanwhile, there stands another possibility that more small hospitals use Cold-Away, while the big careful hospitals inclines to use Coldex. Finally, another reason for Coldex having less user is perhaps that it still needs more time to throw into the current market.

To conclude, the argument is not persuasive as it stands. Before we accept the conclusion, the arguer must convince than Cold-Away actually cause less effects than Codex. The most important thing is that the author should provide evidence to prove that Cold-Away is more effective than Coldex.
