191The following is a letter from a professor at Xanadu College to the college's president.

"The development of an extensive computer-based long-distance learning program will enhance the reputation of Xanadu College. This program would allow more students to enroll in our courses, thereby increasing our income from student tuition. Traditional courses could easily be adapted for distance learners, as was shown by the adaptation of two traditional courses for our distance learning trial project last year. Also, by using computer programs and taped lectures, faculty will have fewer classroom obligations and more time to engage in extensive research, thereby enhancing the reputation of Xanadu."

1学生不仅仅是因为新的教学系统选择学校,还有他因;
2两种传统课程地适应改变不代表所有传统课程都适合;
3节约出地时间不一定就用于科研,老师可以作许多与课程无关地事情;


The arguer claims that the Xanadu College will enhance the reputation of X if the College installs an extensive computer-base long-distance learning program. To make the conclusion more persuasive, the arguer shows us that with the new system the amount of students will increase. In addition traditional courses would easily be adapted for distance learners. Further more with the new technology, the teachers can save their time for more research which is beneficial for the reputation of the school. While the reason sounds attractively and reasonably, but after some careful examination, we will find several logical flaws in it.

In the first place, the arguer's assumption that after installing the new computer system, more and more students will come to the college, then the income from student tuition will increase. But we are not given any information about the reason why students will choose X, just because the new system? Maybe many students’ reasons for choosing a school have some relationship with the location of the school, the tuition of the school, not only depending on the new technology. Without ruling out those possibilities for choices of students, I can not be persuaded by the arguer's assumotion.

Secondly, the mere fact that only two traditional courses could easily be adapted for the distance learner can not show that all the traditional courses will be adapted for. Because, maybe those two courses are really easy for adaptation, but other courses have some difficulty in the adaptation. Different course has different characteristic, unless the arguer illustrates the similarities between the two curses and other courses, I will not follow the arguer.

Thirdly, the arguer's conclusion bases on an assumption that the saving time for the teacher is used for other extensive research. But the arguer fails to give us the evidence to demonstrate the assumption. Even though the teacher has more time for the research, how can we be sure that all the saving time is used for research? Apparently, it is entirely possible that the teachers do many other things which have no relationship with school during the saving time. So the arguer's conclusion is unwarranted.

To sum up, the argument is not persuasive as it stands. To make it more convincing, the arguer should give us more information about the utility of the time which is saved for teachers. In addition, the arguer should shows us that all the courses are really adapted for the new system. While, at the same time, we should know what is the students most care about for choosing a school.
