------题目------Thirteen years ago, researchers studied a group of 25 infants who showed signs of mild distress when exposed to unfamiliar stimuli such as an unusual odor or a tape recording of an unknown voice. They discovered that these infants were more likely than other infants to have been conceived in early autumn, a time when their mothers' production of melatonin—a hormone known to affect some brain functions—would naturally increase in response to decreased daylight. In a follow-up study conducted earlier this year, more than half of these children—now teenagers—who had shown signs of distress identified themselves as shy. Clearly, increased levels of melatonin before birth cause shyness during infancy and this shyness continues into later life.
------正文------
In this argument, based on a research result of a group of 25 infants, the arguer concludes that it was the increased levels of their mothers' production of melatonin before birth which caused shyness of these infants, and this shyness continues into their later life.  As I examined the evidence cited carefully, I found this argument not persuasive for the following reasons.

At first, this argument is based on a confused conception that equaling “signs of distress" with "shyness".  As the arguer presents, the sample of this research was “a group of 25 infants who showed signs of mild distress". However, in the conclusion, the arguer turns to explain that cause of the shyness. We can see that the arguer is not clear about the difference of these two conceptions, and therefore, this argument is not accurate in the logical sense. Furthermore, I reserve my view of the specialties of these sampled infants in the first place, until any other detailed information could be providered. I would simply assume that showing signs of mild distress" when exposed to unfamiliar stimuli" is a common phenomenon of every infant. Without such information from the comparison, I could not understand foundation of this research.
Another problem of this argument is that the arguer fails to provide any sound evidence to prove that the distressing is caused by the mother's melatonin. There might some other factors which will affect the infant's characters, such as healthy situation, genic factors, etc. The arguer fails to rule out any possibilities, therefore, the argument is not convincing as it stands.

To sum up, this argument lacks credibility because its evidence does not lend strong support to the conclusion. To make it logically convincing, the arguer would have to provider more detailed information to show how this research is proved reasonable.
