------题目------
The following appeared in an editorial in a business magazine.
'Although the sales of Whirlwind video games have declined over the past two years, a recent survey of video-game players suggests that this sales trend is about to be reversed. The survey asked video-game players what features they thought were most important in a video game. According to the survey, players prefer games that provide lifelike graphics, which require the most up-to-date computers. Whirlwind has just introduced several such games with an extensive advertising campaign directed at people 10 to 25 years old, the age-group most likely to play video games. It follows, then, that the sales of Whirlwind video games are likely to increase dramatically in the next few months.'
------正文------
In this argument, the speaker suggests that the Whirlwind video games company will dramatically increase its profits by introducing games with lifelike graphics. After a careful scrutiny, however, I find the reasoning suffers from several critical flaws.
To begin with, the reliability of the survey is open to doubt. The speaker does not provide any detailed information about the number, age, gender, occupation, living places of these respondents. Whether the respondents are randomly selected or the question is not leading are both unknown. For example, if the number of people participated in the survey is too small to represent the real trends, and if the questions are leading, opinion revealed from survey result that players prefer games providing lifelike graphics is questionable.
In the second place, even assuming that most players prefer lifelike graphics, there is no indication that such kind of video games will win the market. Firstly, although players like lifelike graphics, the quality of a video game is depend on tons of other factors such as sound, content, convenience of operation, etc. If the game merely has high quality of graphics, players would less likely to buy it, considering other factors. Secondly, since lifelike graphics requires the most up-to-date computers, even if players really want to play it, if they have no such computers and cannot afford them, they will also not buy the game.
Moreover, the effectiveness of the advertising campaign might not be helpful. On the one hand, no evidence shows that people from the age of 10 to 25 are most likely to play video games. If not, the AD campaign would fail. On the other hand, even if people from 10 to 25 are more likely to play video games, the lifelike graphics might not be their favor. Since players in this range have no purchasing power, they cannot afford the expense that is required to play video games with high quality of graphics. In this sense, the campaign is misleading. In addition, the speaker does not mention the quality of the games in the AD campaign. If the video games are of low quality, less people will buy them.
In conclusion, the argument is vulnerable and unpersuasive according the flaws and other possibilities listed above. Unless they all are ruled out, the speaker's assertion that Whirlwind are likely to increase its sale dramatically in the next few months is groundless. |
