Nowhere in history does intellect, including memory, reasoning, perception, etc., play a more important part on the development of society than ours. As far as I am concerned, however, our society has placed too much emphasis on memorial ability, neglecting reasoning skills on the other hand.

To begin with, memory and reasoning are of crucial significance to our society. Newton once said," If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants." This saying is used invariably to point out that most of technology and scientific achievements are based on the legacy, knowledge or experience, left by our ancestors. Without the theories and principles on electricity formulated by scientists hundreds years ago, we would be unable to invent electronic appliances, like televisions, computers, and telephones, which have changed our life once for all. Memory, indeed, enable us to absorb the accumulated wealth and than apply it to further develop our knowledge about the world and ourselves. Also important is the reasoning skills. While human beings rely half on memory for what already known, reasoning makes it possible for us to explore the unknown. Einstein, for instance, set up his theory about the space and time by reduce and analysis. At his time, however, no empirical evidence could prove or disprove Einstein’s theory, but nowadays it turns significantly indispensable to many researches of mainstream areas, like mathematics and physics. The only way can we truly advance in technology and science is to balance memory and reasoning skills to a reasonable extent.

Nonetheless, our society has place enormous attention on memory but far from enough on reasoning.  From elementary schools to universities and colleges, students are asked to memorize unprecedented ample facts and statistics .Even in experiments they are taught a set of rules and procedures to carry the work, while leaving most analysis and calculation to computers. Labor market, as another example, is in increasing need for experienced workers. Seldom does a company or factory bring reasoning skill into their enroll requirement. Why there exist imbalance of societal emphasis on memory and reasoning? The answer is the assertion in us all that the possibility of success acquired is in proportion to the amount of information possessed. And in other times, as illustrated in the latter example, the assembly line reduced the demand for cognitive skills. Works with practical skills and experience produce most. Admittedly, it is undeniable that many jobs and areas calls for people with highly developed reasoning skill, like ones who predict the economy trend, or fashion in the next season. But they only take up a small part of people who pursue careers in the job market. When the jobs availability and educational focus both incline to memory, reasoning skill naturally remains as something “unimportant”, though in fact this is not the case.

In conclusion, to reap the benefit of accumulated wisdom left by our ancestors, memory helps; to explore the unknown world now facing us , we need reasoning skill. Although memorial ability and reasoning skill play a part and parcel role in the development of society, we have paid far more attention on memory than on the latter.

[语言很好。但全文的逻辑上感觉不是特别顺畅，大的面都提到了，但我觉得深入分析的不够。先说reasoning很重要，比如在科学领域如何。然后又说在工厂里被忽视了。你没说为什么在工厂里reasoning为什么重要。反而感觉你论证现代工厂不需要reasoning人才。所以觉得比较乱。可能是这道题太bt了。我一下午都没写好这篇。]
