As the keynote of development of the contemporary society, science and technology provides answers to the majority of the human inquiries. Many people, including educators and other scientific researchers, try to refrain the overall development of the non-mainstream areas of inquiries like astrology, fortune-telling and psychic. However, the role of the latter cannot be oversimplified or even oppressed. Along with the mainstream science, they bring about the mental peace and spiritual satisfaction to the human race.

Admittedly, it is true that overemphasizing on non-mainstream areas of inquiry can undermine the development of science and the society as a whole. Because anyway, many of these studies do not have solid scientific foundations and may lead people to believe in the non-existent theories and cannot yield in fruitful solutions. If people spend too much time on this, they may get addicted and drown themselves in possibly useless things.

However, science cannot simply solve all our inquiries and we do not want to be left no resource to refer. In such a circumstance, the non-mainstream areas of inquiries may be a backup for satisfy our curiosity. This boundless universe presents us not only tracks we are able to follow, it also leaves us with countless mysteries for which no answer exists or the science is not advanced enough to solve. For instance, the issues of the essence of life, extra- terrestrials, psychic power, and paranormal abilities are still remain unknown. In these occasions, since reasoning could not satisfy people’s curiosity, it is natural for us to explore other ways as reflected in the non-mainstream ones. The studies of psychic and paranormal phenomenon endeavor to dig out strange events in the universe, and try to give them rational and sometimes systematic explanations. It is true, these kind of pursuits are largely driven by pure curiosity and serve as a way to satisfy curiosity, but there is still something more significant—the deep conviction in and persistent endeavor to find the truth, to which the paranormal pursuers’ enthusiasm may be even greater than the scientists’, though the pursuers may be blind in some sense.

In fact, in recent years, there appears an interesting trend for people to employ high-tech to develop those non-mainstream inquiry programs like astrology and fortune-telling to help people search for the clue for the unknown life ahead. A deeper reason lies behind the seemingly flourishing scene in the non-mainstream areas. In a certain sense, science is too hard and too true, people sometimes would get tired about all of these and rather keep some fantasy and fun from the non-scientific ones. For instance, human beings have always been curious if we do have pre-life and after-life. Though it is well-known that we come from evolution and everyone of flesh and bones must die, we still sometimes go to read the astrology and fortune-telling books. Compared with hard evolution, this seems more fun and it is so good to imagine we may have a second life and redo what we miss in this present life.

In conclusion, though the non-mainstream areas of inquiries are not playing a major role in our society, as a complimentary resort to satisfy our curiosity and desire for some fun, they should be given some freedom to develop along with the mainstream ones.
