Which role gives society something of lasting value，artist or critic? As far as I am concerned, it is the artist that makes a direct function while the critic makes an indirect function. They can cooperate with each other to give a lasting value to society.

Artists can directly create a lasting value to society. The arts made by artists act as the non-intellect culture of a society and reflect the sense and spirit of humanities in the society. What are you thinking when hearing the Ninth Symphony of Beethoven? How are we encouraged and waked when reading the Old Man and the Sea! How are you inspired when you have seen the bizarre work of Picasso! Everyone has to admit the strong power of arts. It can enhance our life by adding beauty to our surroundings and it is sources of pleasure and relaxations from stresses of everyday life. Socially, arts also functions in every corner of the world, and reveals the ideas and impulses of a society. So it is artists who transmit arts to give people hope, happiness, meditation which are hidden in the heart of human being commonly and give people experience and thought about society as well as make us learn the more about the impulses of the society. All these values will eventually become a lasting value to society.

Critics can not directly create a lasting value to society but have a function on serving as a bridge to connect artists and the public. The evaluation they have made can give artists ideas and inspirations to create more excellent works. So they can enlighten artists in this way to help form the lasting value indirectly. Theoretically speaking, critics, with their profound knowledge of aesthetics and a taste in art, could offer valuable advice to artists. No work in the world is perfect and will not receive any criticism. People should realize that it is through criticism and the following improvement that art can recognize and revise its deficiency. Almost all famous artists in history gain beneficial effects from criticisms that help them completing the great works. So artists can not independently finish the formidable task of giving society a lasting value without the help of critics. In short, critics can play an indirect role in giving a lasting value just as a catalyst.

However, we must realize the criticism is not always reasonable and objective so artist can not accept them completely. Not all critics are responsible, not all criticisms are valuable. There are many subjective factors in the criticism. So artists should meditate the suggestion from critics selectively. Artists must keep a creative mind because arts, the treasure accumulated by generations of human beings, can never be reduced to such simple criticism. Only can we concede that there are some sensible parts in such a lot of criticism. So we should not overemphasis the function of critics. Moreover, artists should not pay too much attention to the criticism. Perspicacity of artists is still the most important factor to create new, enlightening works. In short, artists can give society a lasting value with the help of critic if they have coordinated with each other.

In sum, artists can offer society a lasting value through their discernment to the real beauty and their selective acceptance of kinds of criticism which needs artists to be more creative and discernable, critic to be more responsible and have a more deep understanding of arts.
