At the beginning point of the millennium, numerous concerned people propose that it is the very time that we, inhabitants living on earth in the historical period to meditate and evaluate whether or how far we have advanced or rereated. Under such circumstance, it’s becoming contentious on the issue what methods we should adopt to evaluate the rate of progress. Prudent and rational people would take logical, precise and careful measurements as their inclination while other emotional people vehemently objects this over-objective proposal but opt for some soft criterions such as moral, living background, view of life and the like, as the means to measure the level on which our progress is. However, from my perspective, the measurments, whether emotional or quantitive, should be subject to the concrete case.

In scientific realms like economy,telecommunication, seafaring and so forth, it cannot be denied that use of logic and the exact measurement are the indispensable premises in making a sagacious judgement in that exact measurements furnish us with the awareness of the changes around us and logic enables people to discern whether the transition is positive or negative. The illuminating example involes the navigation of Columbus.Compared with the nearly stagnant velocity in the voyage of Columbus, whom it took about three months to implement a maritime transportation from the continent of Europe to that of New World,people in modern times, with the advent of aeroplanes, can do this within one day without great efforts. It’s through time measurement that we are informed of this dramatical improvement in speed. What’s more, in the remote time, paper letters placed in paper envelopes with stamps is the only access for our progenitors to communicate with their friends or relatives living in far different places while people in modern times can chat with any one they want via emails instantly. Also, instead of tedious researches throught stacks of books or rolls of microfilms in library, people now only need to browse in World Wide Web in order to get the information they want. All these instances are demonstrating that we,human beings, are pacing forward to a better status because we see the enhancement,whether in techniques or living standard, by logical analysing of past and now , and by measuring effects of facilities of past and now.

On the other hand,not all aspects in human development can be indicated by those quantitive measuements mentioned above, nor can the progress in every field be evaluated by the quantitive calculation. Consider, some humanity progress which take places in the spiritual, psychological, philosophy,ideological domains. Can we declare that somebody’s present spiritual condition is better than the former one due to some quantitive standards, for example, he/she has published another three books concerning spirit ever since the time as is considered “former” above? Would an increase in reading quantity about philosophy books bespeak that the reader bear the stamp of authority in philosophy? Could a somewhat systematic and logical article about ideology document the writer’s better ideological thinking than others? Of couse, all the answers to these questions are absolute “no” in that these intangible issues cannot be expained by palpable measurements. Deep down, it’s utterly impossible to establish a standardized criterion on the issue “logic”, take the controversial issue abortion for instance, for people of certain religious belief, it’s illogical to indulge abortion since they think mothers do not have the freedom to deprive infants of their rights of life, nevertheless, for people of other religious, right of life come into being only after birth, which render abortion not an infringement of human rights and shoud be at the pregnant women’s will. Another demonstration is the philosophy of Plato and Socrates, can we state that Plato’s theory about “ideas” and “form” is better-established than that of Socrates? If your response is “yes” , then why and what’s your definition of “better-established”? Certainly, this kind of question cannot be answered easily for the definition of “ better-established” per se is of ambiguity. In this sense, personal interests may result in divaricate understanding of “logic” so as to a great many of things cannot be evaluated by use of logic or some other appreciable measurements.

In sum, reference that can facilitate us to evaluate the progress that has actually taken place are not narrowly confined to logic and measurements. Oftentimes, we should resort to the more flexible evaluation systems to draw a more comprehensive pictures to discern the changes masked by the ostensible figures, statistics and logical deduction.
