          In this era of rapid social and technological development, some contemporary people underestimated the value of looking back past. I agree with the above assertion insofar as in some respects such as the modern technology. While in other respects, however, history, the study and interpretation of the past, indisputably provides guidance for living in the present.

        To begin with, there is meaningless to resort to historical experience when people confront many problems without precedent in the today's new and complex society. Technology leads us in the middle of what's know as information age which facilitates our living as well as a series of problems such as the compelling threat of hackers to the public security, organized crime activities via internet and so forth. Take the treat of hacker for example: Due to the fact that hackers tried to access the system and break the security utilities, sometimes we found that our PC could not function well as usual while chatting with friends or browsing something. When we were addressing such problems, there are no existent even relevant records or experiences in the past to rely on. In this case, history lends no credible support about how to tackle with the problems. Moreover, other social problems including the legitimacy of applying the cloning technology to human body only need the intelligence and effort of contemporary people rather historical experiences.

            However, in other respects remained unchanged throughout human history, learning from the past can provide guidance to us today. For example, traditional values such as honesty, diligence, perseverance, courage and so forth are inherited from one generation to another whenever. When looking back from the past, especially historical characters, one consciously or unconsciously was influenced by the traditional values. From Martin Luther King, we learned honesty was a person's first duty. From Franklin, we learned only through diligence and perseverance can one achieve success. From Roosevelt, we learned one should have sufficient courage to novel facts and to deal with them. Thus, in this case, learning from the past will benefit us in modern society.

            Furthermore, by learning from the past, we can obtain invaluable experience and lessons for the development of our society today. On the one hand, no one could deny that many inventions today are based on the experience of their predecessors. On the other hand, we need to learn lessons from yesterday's failure or catastrophe. For instance, chernobyl nuclear disaster caused the death of 30 people immediately, and a great number of people had to be evacuated as a result of the high radiation levels in the surrounding. From the case, history informs us, we must be pay more attention to the security system of the nuclear plant for the sake of avoiding such disaster happened again in the future.

            In sum, from the discussions talked above, we can lead to the conclusion that the speaker's assertion is partially reasonable: history is rather useless in some respects. However in other respects, history could not only guidance us but also can provide valuable experiences and lessons for us today.:L:L:L:L:L
