拍了!
I deem that a person’s greatness relies on how much contribution he or she has made to the society. In other words, it is determined by whether (是不是应该加个“what”,说错别见怪。)a person has done to the society pushes it to go ahead or make it retrogress. Time and practice will be able to test one’s contribution to the society is good or not. Since this testing process always takes a long time. So it is reasonable to say that the greatness of individuals can only be judged by posterity.
Let’s first focus on the field of politics, which is full of well-known names. Admittedly, there is many famous persons who were recognized as outstanding in their times. However, I still insist that justifications by descendant would be more objective. Take Hitler for instance, in his time, many Nazis adored him as idol. On the contrary, Jews treated him as evil. How could he be judged fairly? I think only posterity can equally consider his good contribution as well as negative impact to the world without any personal emotions.(Hitler是公认的恶魔吧,觉得评价有些不贴切。)
Besides, there are a lot of examples that great achievement fails to be recognized immediately in art. Van Gogh, one of the most famous expressionism painters in the history of human beings, was oblivious in his contemporary society. He could hardly sell any of his paintings for no one appreciated his painting or rather saying that no one could understand his work and his feelings that he wanted to express through his paintings. There are many other similarities, the great musician Beethoven(不公允,生前他就很牛了!), the famous Chinese novelist Cao Xueqin and on and on. The values in their works are overlooked in their own time. This is due to that great people usually go ahead of their times, in this matter, great artists surely should be judged by descendant.
In addition, in scientific field, it is difficult to identify greatness without the benefit of historical perspective. As the proverb says:” Practice is the only criterion to exam the truth.” So one(one’s, a,) theory must withstand years of examination before people realize the great value of it and recognize how great the person who discover the theory. Stephen Hawking, a famous scientist, whose theory in the derivation of universe is considered by many people as persuasive and eminent. However, he does not win any Nobel Prize till now because not enough fact can be provided to prove that his theory is credible and exact. Maybe after several years when there are sufficient evidences to support Hawking’s theory, he will be one of the greatest figure.
(此段的论述似乎有点问题,是不是只有得奖才算是被认可?霍金应该是被时代认可的伟人吧,楼主自己也说了。)
In conclusion, it is not easy to judge whether an individual is great or not. The only judgments can be made by practice and time. They are just like a sift that only those persons with indeed great mind and do(去掉也无妨吧?) truly excellent contribution to the society can be left permanently.
