Nowadays, the nonmainstream areas of inquiry still coexist with the advanced mainstream science. It is not strange that parts of people believe in astrology, fortune-telling or psychic and paranormal pursuits more or less and make choice or decision based on it rather than intellectuality in some cases. Admittedly, the nonmainstream science helps to provide certain psychological solace when the mainstream science cannot offer them. However, people should not exaggerate the role and neglect the miasma of nonmainstream science.

The existence of nonmainstream science is reasonable since it has certain psychological benefits for people, especially those who are educated well or even uneducated. The nonmainstream science could relieve people from some disliked emotion, such as fear, worry, regret, grief and desperation. For example, during the whole life of one person, he or she has to make myriad choices and therefore responsible for the consequence. However, some times people have not sufficient encourage to make a choice and prepares for accepting the aftermath in that they are worry about appearing unpredicted or even damned result. As a result, they shift the opinion from themselves to nonmainstream, the mysterious stars or a stack of tarot cards and the like. They might feel better once they are free from the burden of making final decisions. For another instance, it is possible for everyone to suffer from the leaving of loved. Occasionally, people cannot extricate from the emotion of grief and missing in a short time. Thus they will attempt to contact or connect with the dead via the psychic and paranormal pursuits. The famous film “Ghost” represents the particular trait exactly. Under the specialized circumstance, nonmainstream science alleviates the agony in short term.

Even if the nonmainstream science could afford psychological solace to some extent, the essence of nonmainstream dooms that it demerits outweigh merits. Since it does not root in reason or logic, it cannot provide any practical and useful method in deed, and it might serve as the temporary hallucinogen which does not remedy the illness but aggravate it. As to person level, relying on nonmainstream will lead to the losing individual’s inherent ability, such as courage, responsibility, judgment and initial spatial. Only looking into their own hearts, are people aware of their choices and desires. The change of stars or cards cannot and have not the right to decide instead of people per se. In a not dissimilar way, if people addict in psychic and paranormal pursuit, they will be entangled in self-conception, fantastic and hopeless thought. Those delusions hardly redound to coming back the normal routine from the deep grief. When it comes to society, if the nonmainstream is utilized by some evil people, these criminals will absorb credulous people to take apart in and thereby a evil organization comes into being. Such a evil organization often conduct the terrorism, anti-government activity, which will cause the instability and even bring the war. In balance, the disadvantage of nonmainstream overwhelms its advantage.

Unfortunately, the nonmainstream science will still exist as long as the mainstream has not advanced enough to meet all people’s need. People should face straightforward the embarrassed status and admit that nonmainstream science play a certain role in affording psychological appeasement. In order to attenuate the harm of nonmainstream science, the best method is developing mainstream science and popularizing the education among people.
