题目
Argument238 The following appeared in a memorandum from the president of Mira Vista College to the college's board of trustees.
"At nearby Green Mountain College, which has more business courses and more job counselors than does Mira Vista College, 90 percent of last year's graduating seniors had job offers from prospective employers. But at Mira Vista College last year, only 70 percent of the seniors who informed the placement office that they would be seeking employment had found full-time jobs within three months after graduation, and only half of these graduates were employed in their major field of study. To help Mira Vista's graduates find employment, we must offer more courses in business and computer technology and hire additional job counselors to help students with their resumés and interviewing skills."

In this argument, the arguer suggests Mira Vista to offer more business and computer courses and hire more job counselors in order to help graduates find jobs. He supports his suggestion by comparing the employment situation of Green Mountain College and Mira Vista College. At first glance, his suggestion seems logical, but after careful study, we can find out several flaws as following.
First of all, the arguer fails to build the causal relation between the number of business courses or job counselors and the employment situation. Although last year 90% of Green Mountain College graduates found jobs, we do not know the detailed status of the jobs. It is possible that the salaries were very low, or the jobs were mainly part-time jobs, or the jobs numerously have little relation with graduates' major fields of study. Even if the jobs were satisfying, it is likely because that the specialties of graduates from Green Mountain College are very popular, such as economy, business, computer, and the like.
Secondly, the arguer lists that 70% of Mira Vista College seniors who informed the placement office found full-time jobs within three months, however, the data was only about the students that informed the placement office, and the arguer does not show the other students' employment situation. It is possible that the students involved in the arguer's statistics were only a small part of the whole Mira Vista College seniors, and the other students actually found prospective jobs soon after graduation. What is more, even if the common situation at Mira Vista College was like the arguer's description, it does not certainly result from the lack of business courses and job counselors. Maybe graduates from Mira Vista College mostly had high expectation of jobs and salary, which made them have great difficulties to get jobs.
Last but not the least, granted that the employment situation at Green Mountain College do excel to that of Mira Vista College, it is too cursory to add business and computer courses and hire addition job counselors. Maybe Green Mountain College is Business College, so it has more business courses. Similarly, maybe Green Mountain College has more students, so it needs more job counselors. In addition, there is no evidence to show that more computer courses can help gradates to find jobs. Furthermore, it is possible that Mira Vista College has had enough job counselors, and those counselors did not work well in the past. Thus, what need to do is to make current counselors work better rather than not to hire more counselors.
To sum up, the evidence provided by the arguer is too weak to convince people. To make the suggestion more useful, the arguer has to take the facets discussed above into account, that is, to investigate the genuine reason of the different employment situation between Green Mountain College and Mira Vista College, and to find a suitable way for Mira Vista College graduates to find jobs. |
