Argument179 The following is a memorandum written by the director of personnel to the president of the Cedar Corporation.

"It would be a mistake to rehire the Good-Taste Company to supply the food in our employee cafeteria next year. It is the second most expensive caterer in the city. In addition, its prices have risen in each of the last three years, and it refuses to provide meals for people on special diets. Just last month three employees complained to me that they no longer eat in the cafeteria because they find the experience 'unbearable.' Our company should instead hire Discount Foods. Discount is a family-owned local company and it offers a varied menu of fish and poultry. I recently tasted a sample lunch at one of the many companies that Discount serves and it was delicious—an indication that hiring Discount will lead to improved employee satisfaction."

In this argument, the arguer suggests Cedar Corporation to hire Discount Foods instead of Good-Taste Company to supply the food in the employee cafeteria next year. He supports his suggestion by the high price of Good-Taste's service and the three employees' complaint and his own experience of tasting a Discount's sample lunch. At first glance, his suggestion seems reasonable, but after careful examination, we can find out several flaws as following.

First of all, the arguer says that Good-Taste's prices have risen in the last three years, however, he does not show the status of other companies and does not study the reason for the rise. It is possible that during the past three years, Good-Taste were continuously improving its foods' taste, quality or style, which results the increase of prices. It is also possible that the rise of prices is resulted from inflation and other similar companies also increased their prices. Consequently, unless the genuine reason for the prices change is given, this phenomenon cannot be strong evidence.

Secondly, only by three employees' complaints cannot conclude that the Good-Taste's service is poor. Maybe the complaints were only some special occasions and there were some misunderstandings with the three employees. Similarly, maybe in the past three years most employees were very satisfied with the Good-Taste's foods. Moreover, even if the three employees were truly reluctant to eat in the cafeteria on longer, it is likely that there are thousands of employees and the three ones are only a very small part of the whole. Thus most people's opinions must be considered.

Last but not the least, granted that Good-Taste's foods are really too bad, to choose Discount just according a single experience is too cursory. On the one hand, it is possible that Discount is the first most expensive caterer in the city and there are other suitable companies that can provide delicious and cheap foods. On the other hand, only by a single test is far more enough. It is possible that the taste does not suit other employees. Besides, as employee food, only having delicious taste is not enough, health and sanitation are also demanded. However, the arguer does not give such information.

To sum up, the arguer is too hurried to make the suggestion. To make his suggestion more convincing, he has to take the facets discussed above into account, that is, to survey other employees' opinion and to prove Discount is assuredly better than Good-Taste and the best choose.
