I agree that in some occasions tradition and modernization are incompatible, then one must choose between them. However, in more occasions, modernization is developed from the basic of tradition, and they do not conflict with each other, so one will not need to make the choice.
First of all, we have to admit that sometimes people have to choose one from tradition and modernization since they are incompatible. There are lots of examples in all kinds of realms. For example, in science realm, the traditional accepted earth centric theory is totally opposite to the modern theory heliocentricism, and people can only consider one of them as truth. For another example, in economy realm, traditional planned economy and modern market economy are completely different types; the former lets government control the prices, while the latter makes prices decided only by market. Thus, for a government, it has to select one type; otherwise, if two types are both on effect, the economy will be in a confused status.
However, in fact, tradition is often the basic of modernization and many modern things can find their origins of tradition. From the culture aspect, languages are formed by long-term’s accumulation, many customs are passed down from the ancient time although they may have some changes of styles. From the science aspect, without the traditional knowledge, there will not have the modern science. Lots of modern theories still use the traditional elements and methods. From the political aspect, is it possible that democratic societies come into being directly in the long history of social development? The answer is certainly not. Just because human experienced the crucial slavery society and the arbitrary feudality society, democracy can be finally established. Although slavery and feudality have completely different styles with democracy, they are the basic of democracy.
Finally, we should not overlook the fact that actually in many cases modernization can coexist well with tradition. We can find old buildings and modern ones standing at the same time in many cities, we can hear both popular music and classical music from the radio, we can notice doctors treat patients using both herbal medicine and western medicine, we can enjoy performs in theater which combine the China traditional acrobatics with modern music and lighting. All the examples show us that tradition and modernization not only can coexist, but also can bring some unimaginable effects sometimes. Thus, it is not necessary to choose one.
From the above discussion, we can conclude that it is too cursory to simple judge whether tradition or modernization is better or to choose one from them forcedly because tradition and modernization are 'enemies' in some occasions, while 'friends' or 'relatives' in other occasions. Consequently, to analyze separately is a good wise, that is, we should absorb the good aspects of traditions and discard the bad ones, in addition, combine tradition and modernization well at necessary cases. |
