208. "The way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests. You can tell much about a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people."
The speaker asserts that we can tell much about people’s attitudes and interests through the way people look, dress and act, and a society’s ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people. (有问题,太长了,而且through,by意思接近吧) While I contend that it is wrong to judge people just from their appearance, I agree with the speaker otherwise. In actual fact, I would go further by contending not only that people’s appearance could reveal their attitudes and society’s values, but also that people should be considered through other things like their experience and background.(感觉首段强烈的表现出不同意,虽然某些地方同意作者观点。
As what comes first, we could know much about a person by observing his or her appearance like the way he or she looks, dresses, and acts, which reveal the inside of a person. Fist of all, people tell others a lot just through their face, including his or her eyes, noses, mouths, skin and expression. If you are looking at a face full of happiness, you would know the people you look at is a happy person, or at least one person who is content of his or her life. If you see a pair of blue eyes, you would know that the person you see may be suffering a sad story. Secondly, how one dress would tells much about the person himself. It is popular to write how one feels or believes on one’s T-shirt, by reading which others could know his or her values and interests. Thirdly, the way people act, which is, of course, telling most about them. Take ways people walk for examples, the way athletes walk would make people feel their power, the way pop stars walk shows their confidence and charm, and you would consider one as a shy person if he walks lowering his head. Therefore, people could get floods of information only through others’ looking, dressing, and acting.(这里apperarence还是代表的外部特征的,那和上面不衔接了)
In addition, a society, which is built up by numerous kinds of people, could show its ideas and values by the appearance and behavior of its people. As a basic view point which would be agreed with most people, what people dress could reveal purchasing power of a society, at least to some extent. How could a society, in which everyone wear old clothes and care nothing about fashion, be considered flourish and powerful? (类似句式太多了,能不能换一下) If there is a society in which people like dress formally, it might shows that people in that society are demure and responsible. Thus, people’s appearance and behavior play a significant role in others’ impression of a society.
Nevertheless, it should not be encouraged to judge people, or a society, only through people’s appearance and behavior, because sometimes that would lead to some incorrect conclusion. The founder of Microsoft, Bill Gates, is a strict and responsible person, but he does not like to wear formal clothes, and there is no rule about how people should wear in his company, where everyone dress themselves as they like. So you would be wrong if you consider people working in Microsoft loose and tongue-in-cheek just because of their T-shirts and jeans in working places. There is a better way to judge a person or a society besides of observing people’s appearance and behavior. It is to research a person’s or a society’s history, experiences, and background.(从这里看,全文是保留的支持。
To sum up, if what have been discussed above are(is) considered thoroughly, it is safely to come to the conclusions that we could get much information about people’s ideas and society’s values by observing people’s appearance and behavior.
