TOPIC: ARGUMENT174 - The following recommendation was made by the president and administrative staff of Grove College, a private institution, to the college's governing committee.

"We recommend that Grove College preserve its century-old tradition of all-female education rather than admit men into its programs. It is true that a majority of faculty members voted in favor of coeducation, arguing that it would encourage more students to apply to Grove. But eighty percent of the students responding to a survey conducted by the student government wanted the school to remain all female, and over half of the alumni who answered a separate survey also opposed coeducation. Keeping the college all-female, therefore, will improve morale among students and convince alumni to keep supporting the college financially."

The arguer claimed that Grove College should remain the all-female system rather than admit men into its programs. The evidence showed by the arguer seems quite right at first glace, but they cannot go on supporting the arguer's suggestion after analysis.

The individuals who are testing the opinion of students for evidence in the student government may not have the proper scientific instrument or educational training necessary to detect the true feeling that may be present. Can they imagine the living and study situation after the school change to coeducation for they have no experience on the coeducation? Before they doing this survey, do they make sure which education method can bring more benefits to students? They may not consider the possibility that coeducation can enhance the study inspiring to both sexes of students. Boys can help girls on the curriculums such as physics chemistry biology and mathematics, besides girls can help them on language art and so on. Girls in the school also can solve some psychological problems with boys which can not be easily touched by other girls. But in the argument, we can not find only evidence show that the student community gives out the information to girls; even not do such analysis before they do the survey.

Furthermore, it is also unreasonable to conclude that the school’s supporting will reduce after change to coeducation system. The arguer only considered some recently alumni would not keep on their supporting to the school after changing the education way, but did not think about after changing more other alumni may involve in. If students become more superior in learning academic courses and doing living works after engaging boys to the school, it is surely that the school can attract more social supporting. Even more, some opposing alumni may change their opinion at last.

So it is important for the school to choose a right education method to keep the improving of the school other than keeping old insufficient teaching way only for the traditional format.
