TOPIC: ISSUE157 - "There is no such thing as purely objective observation. All observation is subjective; it is always guided by the observer's expectations or desires."
WORDS: 616         TIME: 0:44:54          DATE: 2006-7-26

Some people hold the opinion that observations are objective, while some others claims that there is no objective observations and all these are guided by the observer's opinions. In my analysis, there is an element of truth in both these assertions, observations varied in different ways give us diverse information that may be objective or subjective.

Thanks to the high technologies, people nowadays can see facts recorded by cameras, which provide us with vivid pictures of things that is objective. Plenty photographs and TV programs show us the exact things that happen in this real world. Even in dangerous situations when earthquakes happens or a volcano erupts, some brave people do not want to give up the chance to record the exact moment of happening and leave us the objective observation on thing. From this aspect, there do exist observations that are objective.

However, in this world, most observations are not objective as what is discussed above. Our lives are full of examples of subjective observations. Take TV news for example: although using the actual records of what had happened, the broadcast of an event will differ for the point of view. A recent event concerns the war between Israel and Lebanon. When a battle plane was reported drop from the sky, the reactions to the same event are quite different from the two sides. While the Israel asserted that it was hit by their enemy, the official from Lebanon said to the public that it dropped for accident. The answer differs because the two sides hold different opinions, more accurately speaking, different interests.

Moreover, when reading a book, we should keep in mind that it is the opinion of an author although in many parts of the book are referred to historical events. When appreciating a painting on an exhibition, we should think first about what the painter wanted to presented us from such a picture, the intention of the painter is not simply show us a certain image, but to express the feelings and thinking from the bottom of one's heart. When attending a science lecture in college, we cannot expect the professor to tell you the truth, but his or recent popular opinions on science.

What aforementioned are examples of subjective observation that is intended. But many other observations are influenced by people's expectations even if we do not know that. Suppose an occasion that a group of children are asked to give a description about an apple. No matter how reasonable we thought the answers should be the same about such a real object, the answers, actually, vary in kinds. One child describes an apple is round and green while some others argue that the color should be red; Once more, a child tells you that apples are sweet and delicious but another child considers apples do not taste good. People's observations on things differ due to their diverse experience. If one is brought up in an environment full of love, he or she will think this world to be a big, warm family that people support each other. The idea will be opposite if one lives in a world with indifference, that only sees the selfishness of people.

From what is mentioned above, we can safely arrive at the conclusion that since the world is in diversity, our life is filled with observations that both objective and subjective. We cannot change the facts but accept them and judge by ourselves that whether an observation are pure objective or not.

(前面是不是再加一两句好啊,这样显得很突兀. 不行也写个Regarding the controversial issue that whether all observations are subjective or not, different people have different points of view.)  Some people hold the opinion that observations are objective, while some others claims that there is no objective observations (since) all these are guided by the observer's opinions. In my analysis, there is an element of truth in both these assertions, observations varied in different ways give us diverse information (我觉得这半句有点问题好像跟主题没什么关系啊. 要是说information 是观察可能主观可能客观也不能用diverse吧)that may be objective or subjective.

Thanks to the high technologies, people nowadays can see facts recorded by cameras, which provide us with vivid pictures of things that is objective. Plenty (of) photographs and TV programs show us the exact things that happen(what has happened just now exactly) in this real world. Even in dangerous situations when earthquakes happens(happened) or a volcano erupts(erupted), some brave people do not want to give up the chance to record the exact moment of happening (in order to) leave us the objective observation on thing. From this aspect, there do exist observations that are objective.
(这个观点很不错!)
However, in this world, most observations are not(as) objective as what is discussed above. Our lives are full of examples of(as) subjective observations. Take TV news for example: although(givien) using the (same) actual records of what had happened, the broadcast of an event will differ for the point of view. A recent event concerns the war between Israel and Lebanon. When a battle plane was reported drop from the sky, the reactions to the same event are quite different from the two sides. When attending a science lecture in college, we cannot expect the professor to tell you the truth, but his or recent popular opinions on science.(可以再写一句总结照应一下前面)

What (are) aforementioned (我看了你几篇文章你好像很喜欢用这个词,可能比较高级吧 ~要注意aforementioned是adj ! ) are examples of subjective observation that is intended. But many other observations are influenced by people's expectations even if we do not know that.(我觉得这两句也可用conscious和unconscious或subconscious 来对应) Suppose an occasion that a group of children are asked to give a description about an apple. No matter how reasonable we thought the answers should be the same about such a real object, the answers, actually, vary in kinds. One child describes an apple is round and green while some others argue that the color should be red; Once more, a child tells you that apples are sweet and delicious but another child considers apples do not taste good. Moreover, when reading a book, we should keep in mind that it is the opinion of an author although [in][去掉] many parts of the book are referred to historical events.[可以做一下解释 Since the author delineates the historical events and figures with his own perspective and indight,] When appreciating a painting on an exhibition, we should think first about what the painter wanted to presented us [from][with] such a picture, the intention of the painter [is][does] not simply show us a certain image, but to express the feelings and thinking from the bottom of one's heart.
