In some realms of life such as academic and politics, pragmatism and idealistic are equally important, while in some other spheres such as business, practical behavior is more important.

The different aims of different realms determines either practical or idealistic attitude we should have upon them. For example, the aim of science is to explore the unknown and make best use of it, while in respect of arts, the goal is to represent the ideals of the artists and let people obtain pleasure and enlightenment from it. Hence, for the science, it is at times necessary take an idealistic point of view compared with the practical one for the arts.

In the academic, although the research is more and more relevant to the practical account such as the industries, the scientists also need to perform some theoretical research that has little to do the practice. Since sometimes we can not envision the research's application, it probably will benefit the mankind in the future. For example, the research of Nobel Prize winner John Nash, a famous economist and mathematics, when he was a Ph. D student in Princeton University, he conducted a research on the behavior on the pigeons, which was purely for the mathematic aim. But tens of years later, it is widely used in the economics, which he never thought of before. Thus, the research for the science's sake is necessary, and we should not consider the practice alone.

Also in politics, the government needs to consider not only the pressing problem but also the long-term goal, and occasionally the latter becomes more important than the former. The pressing societal problems such as the enduring economic increase and low level laid-off are rather urgent. Since if they can not be addressed immediately, the society may result in turmoil. An illustrative example for this is the Depression in the 1930s, during which many banks went bankrupt, leading to the turbulence of the whole America. However, the government needs to consider the idealistic goal as well. For a country, it is the enduring development, not the short period booming, that keep the society in a good state. For example, the government needs to preserve the environment for the benefits of the descendants, and sometimes bridle the economic booming in order to keep lasting increase. The example of china is a case of point. For nearly one decade, the economic increase of it is about 8 percent. In fact, the data could be more appealing such as 10 percent or even more. But it is the government who restrain the sharp increase so that the trend can last for a long time. Hence, government need to strike a balance in the practical and the idealistic and sometimes the idealistic may be more important than the practical.

In contrast, for the business men, it is more important to take a practical point of view. The goal of the company is to obtain the maximum profit at lowest cost. The president of a corporation should be able to compare different strategies to pick out the most beneficial one. For instance, a manufacturing company whose product is MP3 that once is very popular among the youth. But when the Mp4, which can show the image and sound simultaneously, comes out, the leaders of the company should consider whether to turn their product to Mp4 or not. This is rather practical.

In conclusion, we should take different point of views when comes to different realms. Sometimes practical is necessary, sometimes pragmatism is important, or sometimes both are vital to achieve success.
