TOPIC: ISSUE48 - "The study of history places too much emphasis on individuals. The most significant events and trends in history were made possible not by the famous few, but by groups of people whose identities have long been forgotten."
WORDS: 512 TIME: 0:45:00 DATE: 2006-8-20
提纲:
1.多数人在有些历史事件中确实重要.
2.由于历史学家精力和时间的限制,不可能研究所有的大多数
3.有些历史时间中起突出作用的是少数人.
As the arguer claims that historians placed too much emphasis on individuals, then the significance of masses have been ignored, we should indeed admit that most of our recognition of long past history is made up of famous celebrities. But, despite groups of people are important, we cannot replace the names of individuals by names of masses.
Firstly, there is no doubt that groups of persons are foundations of most social affairs, since only when they support can plans of leaders be practiced. For example, one of the most famous architectures in China is Great Wall which has been contributed by thousands of persons. Though it is the first king of Qin Dynast who creates such an idea, the most important participations of this fabulous Great Wall are the groups who devote almost all of their life into building. That is to say, we cannot deny that numbers of famous persons and affairs in history receive supply from others. And, in some cases, those supplies are just the key aspects to determine the final result.
However, can historians pay much more attentions on groups of persons than some specific individuals? In my opinion, even if they would like to, they do not have enough time or spirits to focus on such a countless masses. During the whole long river of history, the number of persons who ever appeared in some history affairs is huge. It is nearly impossible missions for history to focus on numbers of people, even only in one history activity. Because of complexities, much details of information need to be collected. What is worse, historian have to face many difficulties in this proceed, for less descriptions of infamous masses can be discovered. Obviously, they can hardly do further research without sufficient information. Therefore, from such objective limitation, though groups of persons are important, most research of history have to focus on some special individuals.
Then, in some cases, individuals influence much more than others, thus they desire to be emphasized more. For instance, in Renaissance, numbers of artists produced kinds of paintings, sculptures, but the most famous of them are Da Vinci and Michelangelo. Being fascinated in Mona Lisa, people cannot remember other painters but Da Vinci; be attracted by David, people have to admit Michelangelo are much more excellent than others. Though Renaissance is a special period, full of numbers of great artists, the most persons should be emphasized are limited. In contrary, for some serious blunders, the individual who provoke persons' indignation ought to take all the responsibilities and gilts, such as Hitler. He must be emphasized, not any others. If there were no Hitler in those period, all the history of World War II will change, and Jewish might to avoid those disasters. That is to say, some individuals cannot be ignored and, historians have to note their names in history researches and books.
To sum up, though groups of persons play important roles in process of long history, significance of individuals have to be noticed. And from some practical limitation, historians need to pay attentions on limited important individuals. |
