TOPIC: ISSUE41 - "Such nonmainstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits play a vital role in society by satisfying human needs that are not addressed by mainstream science."
WORDS: 554 TIME: AM 02:57:57 DATE: 2006-12-29
Wholly the society of human being has developed from the antiquity to nowadays, with a lot of achievements on science and art, as a result of which people become more and more sensible, however, the non-scientific nonmainstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling and psychic and paranormal pursuits never escape from the stage of history. Surprisingly, sometimes they are extrodinarily popular during every rank of people. In the view of this, these areas satisfy people's needs significantly, but not every people, nor every time and we cannot get the assertion that they play a vital role in society.
It is obvious that less and less people believe astrology, fortune-telling and something like this because the more and more concerns are focused on the fundamental education, which help the youth get the basic knowledge of the principles of the universe and the world. In this case, a educated person will doubt the viewpoints of these nonmainstream areas after cogitating them.
Moreover, as the history implies, it is always with the catastrophe of science when these area are accepted by many people of the society, such as the Middle Ages of the Europe, and the Ming Dynasty of China, which are of darkness for human. During these periods, many researches had to stop and even worse, many scientists were killed by the frantic of these areas. The history also tells us that it is the science, technology and art that impel the whole society, for only with science and technology, people know more and more about the nature and make the society better and better and only with the art we people know more and more about ourselves and make various impressive works reflecting the emotion of people. So it is presumptuous to judge the importance of the nonmainstream areas according to the popularity of them.
It must be admitted that our human beings have curiosities about future since we were born. That is, people want to know about what is going to happen, is it a chance or a disaster and how they can reduce the destructions to the least level. Therefore, when some people or some group claim that they can tell you what are others' destinies going to be and even make several prophecies more or less of accuracy by chance or not, it is reasonable that people are fond of such inquiry. In conclusion, they are welcome because we have anxieties about fate even we are not sure about its existence.
However, these nonmainstream areas also deactivate people about life, because people can get assuagement from the predictors and the fatalist, when implied the failures are not because of their fault but destined to happen. Thus, people lose courage to struggle to calamity, to upset things they meet, to life, since everything is pre-decided. People also lose energy to make things better since they know "they're going to be better". In fact, the image they draw about tomorrow is totally an illusion. What is tomorrow depends on what you do today, not on what the stars or the cards. It is also the reason why these areas do not play an important part in society.
To sum up, I concede that the nonmainstream areas satisfy some people's needs, but it they have nothing to do with the development of society and human.

174."Laws should not be stationary and fixed. Instead, they should be flexible enough to take account of various circumstances, times, and places."
