144 It is the artist, not the critic,* who gives society something of lasting value."
*a person who evaluates works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc.
========================================================================
Have you ever thought that who gives something of lasting value to society? As the speak claims,
I also agree that it is the artist rather than the critic does.
To be honest, what the critic do do have something meaning to society. The purpose of the critic
is to judge whether the work is good or not; to think about what is revealed in the work—anything
but the work itself. Therefore we have to concede that a large portion of works are widely known by individuals with the help of the critic, who make people have a vague acknowledge about works. Do you remember how many novels or movies catch your eyes the moment you read their quite excellent critism? Many, at least. In addition, the critic makes a way how to appreciate an art work, by which common people can do the same not merely having a sense of beauty.
Lasting value, however, is not the pride of the critic. Obviously, the critic take more concerns about the meaning of one work than itself. That is to say, critists tend to believe the fact that the majority of works are with some particular meanings, like political value, because of its place and times. As a result, they may neglect an art itself. For example, here an painting shows a charming lady is smiling gravely. Seeing this, the critic may wonder many matters: Who is the lady? Why she smile in this way? What kind of relationship between she and the painter is? Acturally, for this painting, these questions are non-value.
In another case, the critic usually put his own attitude on an art work, sometimes called bias so that the judgment of the work is not positive. This also can ruin a great work. Consider this. There are many great artists such as Van Gogh, whose works thought to be terrible first become priceless masterpieces now. What the critic said is just the represent of his opinion and a value of his place and time.
In fact , works are created by the artist. They can give something lasting value. The works to some extent mirror the expression and the insight of the artist. Despite social value may change with times, the contexts of arts are permanent. Individuals, especially the critic, can interpret arts, but they have no ability to turn them to another ones or another forms.
To sum, the critic can help an art work better understood, otherwise it is the artist created an art
work, gave it values lasted for a very long time.
