题目：ARGUMENT117 - The following is a memo from the business manager of Valu-Mart stores.

"Over 70 percent of the respondents to a recent survey reported that they are required to take more work home with them from the workplace than they were in the past. Since Valu-Mart has not seen impressive sales in its office-supply departments in the past, we should take advantage of this work-at-home trend by increasing at all Valu-Mart stores the stock of home office machines such as printers, small copy machines, paper shredders, and fax machines. We will also increase stock of office supplies such as paper, pens, and staplers. With these changes, our office-supply departments will become the most profitable component of our stores."

   In this memo, the arguer suggests Valu-Mart store take advantage of work-at-home trend by increasing their stock of home office machines and office supplies. To support his recommendation, the arguer cites a recent survey which shows various of people are likely to take work home with them from workplace than they were in the past.  This memo has several problems below.
   To begin with, the fact that over 70 percent of respondents to the survey admit they bring more work home recently does not certainly lend the conclusion that we should stock more office supplies to meet the work-at-home trend. Firstly, we have not known who take part in the survey. Maybe all the participants are office white-collars, so that the statics would be unpersuasive because they cannot stand for the whole society. Secondly, we have to make clear why so many people like to bring work home than before. Is that a new fashion trend, or just for an event which is going to happen? For instance, if Olympic Games are to be held in next week, of course a great number of people would have a lot of work to do that they cannot help but take them home. If such assumption is true, the trend of work-at-home will subsidies soon, even before we get all stocks ready.
   In addition, the arguer fails to prove that Valu-Mart stores has not seen impressive sales means the store should shift to office supplies implies. Perhaps Valu-Mart is a business which supplies a special field, such as musical instruments or chemical equipments. The demands of these goods cannot compare with daily commodities. In this case, it is not strange that Valu-Mart does not have impressive sale. Without considering its actual situation, the business will not achieve the profits that they want.
    Furthermore, there is no evidence proving that office machines will be largely demanded when so many people begin to take work home. Common sense tells us that office machines mentioned in the memo like printers, small copy machines and paper shredders are used to deal with word works. Yet we have not known what kind of people are most likely to continue their work at home, it is unadvisable to stock these valuable office machines. Moreover, with highly developed technique of Internet and personal computers, many office supplies are not necessary.
    To sum up, the memo which is based on a survey without enough information is not believable and persuasive. In order to strength the arguer's memo, we have to know circs of both our business and customers. Only after we understand the reason for the increasing number of work-at-home peoples and analyze what they need, will we ensure such changes may bring us profits.
