The video camera provides such an accurate and convincing record of contemporary life that it has become a more important form of documentation than written records.
The speaker gives a view of the value of the function of the video camera, which, however, I don't approve to that stage. As the development of modern technology help realize many dreams of mankind, video camera, as one of such inventions, provide a new way for people to record and to perceive, but it cannot take the place of written records as from of documentation, as least not now. The videos we are discussed are limited to those naturally recorded but not the images or sounds of the content of the written materials.
The video camera actually provides vivid vision and sound and does a great help to the human society. With video records we may watch as if we are in the live site. Rather than reading the material shown on the written records trying hard to guess the allusion as well as to understand the literal meanings, we can choose to judge on our own while watching video records. It only provides us a broad range of view but also the abundance of details. A static picture can imply a lot which may need a great length of written materials to illustrate, not to mention what a serial of them, video, can contain. Also, videos are easy to perceive and understand. Children would like to watch a video of horses that running in the South Africa rather than to read tons of research papers on it in the playtime in the afternoon. Moreover, videos of natural phenomenon, such as volcano, can be easily understood while some written materials may not.
However, videos have shortages that prevent them to become major form of documentation. First, it cost more to record and display. Recording video materials needs electricity and disks and videos requires specific machines to play them. Although portable machines are now provided in many countries, they are still too expensive for most poor people.Secondly, videos are much harder than written materials to produce, edit, store, and scan, Which increase the expenses of making documentations. And The speed of human to process written materials are much faster than video. And what's more, what documentation should do is to illustrate, the ideas and conceptions of the subject, not only the presentation of it, and only written records can illustrate with specific items and forms that maximally avoid the misleading of it. Otherwise, thousands of focus point may appear to thousands of people for the same subject.
Nevertheless, videos are a great kind of materials that can be added to the written ones so that help understand the topics. Videos and written materials have their advantages and disadvantages, and should be combined together to form a best form of documentation. Take the E-book of the function of a antique camera for example. It is written about the producing date, place and the producer, which can quickly and accurately provide the overall information of the camera. And if you are interested in the structure of the camera, you can choose to watch a video of it to know more.
Finally, with the help of video materials, written records can offer us a full range of vision of the subject that documentation should provide.
