Tradition and modernization are incompatible. One must choose between them.

Indeed, tradition and modernization are incompatible literally, as they have their own symbols and values and are often held by different parties, which may, however, compromise with each other on certain issues, and tradition and modernization would nourish and illuminate each other in their interconnectedness. They are more likely to be incompatible and interactive at the same time. And as we live in such a diverse society and influenced deeply by it, we have few opportunity to and have to choose between them with caution.

Tradition is formed as the civilization progresses and is stable for a relatively long time. Thus certainly it has its advantages. Tradition do a great help to the whole society for its stability. Rather than modernity, tradition allows the necessary common sense and values among the society, which unites the civilians together and makes agreements among them. When the slavery was still accepted as consensus, people take it for granted that slavery was as normal as the use of animal force. The society performs relatively as a whole one. However, the stability of the society was broken when the modern view of slavery was announced and spread. To this point, the tradition was suspected, abandoned and forced to give way.

Moreover, the tradition sometimes can be the identity of a region or society. Take spring festival for example. Spring festival is one of the most important holidays in Chinese tradition, which means the start of New Year and was taken as the most important day for family gathering together. As the globalization, one of the effect of modernization, developed, many holidays of others have been introduced to the Chinese and the spring festival was brought to other countries too. The importance of spring festival is not impaired while people can enjoy more amazing time with more culture tradition. And we can see that tradition and modernization are not as incompatible as it was asserted as the topic.

Actually, what is modernization to the elder citizens of us , would probably be the tradition of us now. They can transfer and develop as the civilization goes. And they change in a gradual way, just like we have the elderly and the young in a family at the same time. We can't tell them apart absolutely, for which one is good and which one is bad and should be dismissed. Traditions always mean a lot to us, and least they have historic values. We may treat them in a different way. Just like the slavery we discuss above. There are still many other forms of discrimination in the world today, though it has been so many years after the abandon of the slavery. We have to accept the fact that the consistence of both tradition and modernization are always the case we should face with and what we can do is not to choose one from them but to change according to the require of the development and new situation that we are confronting and to reserve those what we need and rely on.

To conclude, with the distinct difference of tradition and modernization, spontaneously or passively, transform will run in a reasonable way and we will find that to choose the way out would be more complicate than just to pick one from them.
