"Education will be truly effective only when it is specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student."


Will education be truly effective only when it is specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student? I agree with this to some extent. However, in order to balance the development of the society, education should give comprehensive directions to students.
To begin with, needs and interests can inspire students and therefore lead to success. With the interest students like to explore the cause and fact and with the needs students will make great effort to achieve their goals. Thus, Education should provide with specific courses to students. Modern education is developing to this direction. For instance, from primary school to university, there comes about many curricula ranging from math to art, physics to literature for students to choose freely. And the university admits students who interest in other field to change their majors. Many scientists win the great award after they rechoose their research fields. Hoffmann, the Nobel Prize winner in chemistry, is a case in point. Once he majored in literature and got the diploma. However, by virtue of the interest, he turned the research to quantum chemistry as a graduate student. Finally, he brought forward the principle of the conservation of molecular orbital symmetry which is considered as the landmark on the chemistry road.
Furthermore, education should serve to students who pay for the tuition. Cultivating students to be unique as well as special, the educators have to concentrate more on their students’ interest and needs, or the talent may be snuffed out by the inflexible teaching. As the consumers, we students have the right to develop If Bill Gates didn’t drop out from the Harvard University, the Microsoft company would not be existed and the development of computer industry absolutely impeded. Only when the education caters to the students’ thought, significant achievement can be reached by students.
However, sometimes the cognition of the students to the world is not comprehensive and their needs as well as interests may be limited and biased. In this sense, education should lead to a positive and right direction. For instance, vast majority of students interest in economy, not because they like the knowledge and theories in economy but the strong will to earn money. Actually, they ignore the risk and danger in the economic activities. Some students have no interest in archaeology just due to they think it is too tired to make research in the relic, and if they know the pleasure in the process of finding the art and culture of ancient times they would like to devote themselves to this mystery and meaningful filed.

All in all, to some extent the education should be designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student and at the same time equip students with a moral compass and ballast to prevent them from being tossed about aimlessly in the study sea.
