TOPIC: ISSUE54 - "History teaches us only one thing: knowing about the past cannot help people to make important decisions today."

In retrospect, the history provides people a chance to study the trends and try to predict them. From Prince Henrique's nautical school to Peter the Great's shipbuilding class in Holland, both contribute to the two nation's development, we understand the importance of education. From the Great Depression to the Hurricane Katrina, we observe the way out of mass. History is the treasure that our ancestors give us. And close examination of it can commonly, if not always, ensure a decision of our ongoing affairs.
Above all, the history is complex and often cause butterfly effects. That is, one specific issue could have dramatic effects on other issues in different places and times. Aside from observation of the process of how history happened, we should also study the link between the reasons and consequences and thus evaluate the suggestions to ongoing decisions.
As for the Great Depression that I mentioned above, provide advice for us to understand the dos and do-nots, since we are experiencing a dramatic economic downturn. We should build the confidence of citizens to ensure the situation would not go from bad to worse, compared to the failure to do so in 1930s. We should try our best to prevent any nationalism or jingoism, strengthen the cooperation between nations in order to figure a way out of the predicament, compared to the timing of economic crisis that Nazi in Germany came in powerful position and brought human beings the most sever lost throughout the history. Since we have be wrong for once, there is no reason for us to be wrong again, with the understanding of history.
Admittedly, there do exist certain affairs in the history that seems has little to do with our decisions since time is changing and situations are varied. Wu Sangui, one general of both Ming Dynasty and Qing Dynasty, sacrifice his former kingdom, the Ming Dynasty to Qing Dynasty simple because one woman. However, study of certain history cannot provide us suggestions to decisions since it is so specific and much less likely to happen in the modern age, when the social moral standards vary. It may also seem useless to study the kingship of any countries, as there is few countries that the king or queen is still holding the power of the nation. However, for decision makers, it is also a chance to understand how people would get angry from the glorious revolution and what characters are cherished from the Princess Diana's funeral in Westminster Abbey. The situation that history cannot even hint for ongoing decisions is actually very very rare.
However, the history has more. In addition to ensure people a chance to study trends, which from my perspective is eternal phenomena, the history also give us a chance to understand the humanities and identities, both are vital to decision makers. When it comes to the Hurricane Katrina, Cuba and Venezuela, both hostile to the US government, pledged to help. Sri Lanka, still recovering from the Indian Ocean Tsunami, also helped. We also witnessed the concert held by the musicians, pop singers, rock singers and hip-hop singers were got together to raise donations, regardless of their hostility to each others in certain time. Here, we observe the humanity’s most dazing part, the love. For the decision makers, it is of vital importance to recognize the humanities, both negative and positive, that is the seven deadly sins or love, to make wise decisions. For instance, how should the US government treat the Cuba or Venezuela, still hostile or seek a chance to communicate and tackle problems? It is true that it has been for 6 six years from their assistance to rescue in the New Olean. But it is also true that those humanities will remain regardless of the passing time. It does not matter if it would be six years or six decades but a alternative that the decision makers should consider. The history provides much more for we to make decisions through time is different.
In sum, the history is the mirror as the Chinese reckon, it reflects the consequences associated with certain actions. Thus, it advises us to do certain things and not to do others. Further, history also presents the human's most valuable and vulnerable traits, humanities, the decision makers should always be carefully about that and try to make the wise decisions that benefit the society. |
