Is it more important for the scholars and researchers pursue their individual interests rather than consider whether their work makes a contribution to the large society, as the speaker maintains? It is undeniable that pursuing individual interests is a critical impulse which enables some scholars and researchers to engage in their works and deal with them efficiently. However, in my view, the most work engaged by the scholars and researchers should be responsible for the development of the whole society. Moreover, pursuing the individual interests and making contribution to the society are not mutual exclusive.
Admittedly, it is the power of interest which encourages some scholars and researches to struggle in their own fields and make considerable accomplishments at the end. The example of the invention of stream engine aptly illustrates this point. Watt, a notable inventor in England who got the inspiration from the streaming cooker when he was a young boy, gendered the strong interest of mechanism and then invented the stream engine which propelled the industrial revolution in the Europe.
Another example which can certificate the significant role of interest comes to Darwin, an influential person in the science field, who raised an unprecedented theory of biological evolution which results from the natural election. And some latest researches indicate that he was fascinated with kinds of biological species even in his childhood. In short, we should not limit the individual interests of scholars and researchers which can bring some results unexpected. Conversely, we should create favorable conditions to encourage every person to make achievements in their interested areas.
However, it seems to be some extreme if some scholars or researchers do everything just for satisfying their interests, regardless of other external elements. They may be considered as a kind of stubborn persons who will certainly have little accomplishments in their researches and studies. And the undue pursue for personal interest may result in some irrational acts which do little for the advance of the knowledge and the development of the whole society.
Moreover, without the contributions of the scholars and researches, our society cannot be able to develop steadily and healthily. For example , the innovation of the science of internet, which devotes to make the people to get information easily and effectively, exactly play a critical role in the democratization of the society. And the advent of automation enables sorts of companies to improve their productive efficiency, and at last propels the progress of industrialization. In short, it is that the determination of making our society a better place for living impulses kinds of scholars and researches to devote themselves to some areas which associate with the development of the whole society closely, even at the price of their individual interests.
At last, as far as I am concerned, pursuing individual interest is not incompatible with the consideration of the contribution to the whole society. Some scholars and researches who research in their interested areas and at the same time can bring important contributions to the society. An example which can explain reasonably comes to the area of arts. Some writers or painters whose works are mainly accomplished according to their own interests may be accepted by the public for their unique style or unusual value. And their works may evoke the humankind to pursue a prosperous and harmonious society.
In sum, I agree with the arguer that the scholars and researches should emphasize the power of their individual interests. Nevertheless, it is equally important for the scholars and researches to engage in something practical conducing to the development of the society. Furthermore, it is not paradox to make contribution to the whole society by the scholars and researches through engaging in some fields in which they interested. |
