Issue 144:It is the artist, not the critic,* who gives society something of lasting value
During the Middle Ages the word ARTIST already existed in many countries.Aritists are the kind of people who always make stylish and artistic masterpieces to express their attitude about life and society. However, in order to publish their great works, they can not fail to notice the functions of critics. From my point of view, there is a coherent relationship between the artist and the critic, both of them are imperatively laying a solid foundation of expressing lasting values to the quotidian world.
Artists seek for the beauty and reality of arts while critics pursue the
rational basis for art appreciation. It is true, from Classicalism to Modernism, that many of critics were not so coorperative with artists. However, that does not mean that it is hopeless for both the artists and the critics to give ever-lasting values to this world together, because they have the same principles of arts. Without Charles Baudelaire’s advocation, Manet could not be listed in the form of the artists in the19st, even they had many differences and argues in the genre of a specific work.
What’s more, that is the essence of the artistic work determins the fact that the critics
and the artists can pass the lasting values on the public equally. The masterpieces are often too grand or even abstract (especially modern arts) for normal person to know.If a person who have no knowledge about morden arts, why should him understand the Picasso’s casual sketches on a shabby canvas? If there is no person understand the artistic work, how could we say that the artist can give society something of lasting value? So, It is the critics’ obligations to articulate the meaning hiding under the surface of the brilliant works and make people understanding the artistic imaginations of the artists.
Last but not least, no one could say that all the masterpieces afront of us are classical and valuable.Maybe the great work which is done in this centurary will not draw people’s attention in the later one. That is to say, a great artistic work which is acceptable for this generation may not be acceptable for the next generation. Therefore, there should be a wise critic who plays a important role in evaluating the masterpiece following the principles of arts and giving the artists
certain suggestion so that the artists should realise that what is the
problems that the public really care about. And for the critics, it is also important to look over the realities with a new angle which was provided by the artists’s masterpieces. Only by doing that, can the critics never get envolved in the theoretically triky mindedness to treat the world as cliche.
After explaining the important relationship between the artists and the critics, we can see the true fact that it is the artists who sacrifice all their inspiration for the imcomparable works and critics who advocate for them to make their artistic harvest understanding in the society. And the layman like me can enjoy the greatness and receive the values that the artists and the critics want to give.
