According to the speaker, we can reveal a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people as the way the look, dress and act can actually reflect their attitudes and interests. In my view, while in certain respects the habits and customs of people could indicate their attitudes and values, in other respects they cannot.
Under some circumstances, the way people look and dress does inform us of the society's ideas and values. One telling example involves the dressing of Muslim, who values their traditional clothing over modern clothing. We can easily tell the main characters of an individual if he is Muslim while dressing in traditional clothing, as his outlook indicates his customs and values. Moreover, a society whose member tend to be strong and healthy might pay much attention to physical health by taking enough outdoor exercises, such as climbing, racing, cycling and so forth. While at the same time, the society with lots of people overweight tend to look down upon the importance of exercise, paying more time to indoor activities as watching TV or playing computer games. In short, the appearance of people does reflect the customs and habit of a society in certain respects.
Additionally, through observing the act of ordinary people of a society, we can discover the habits and customs of it, including the diet habit as well as religious beliefs. For people from Eastern Asia, through observing the diet of them, we can easily find that they are used to feeding on rice while those from Europe and America find it difficult to have a delicious dinner without dishes of meat and beef. Having observed the dinner of Muslim, we can easily figure out that it is forbidden to have any pork in their tables, as they do not eat it at all for the reason of religious belief. Furthermore, by observing the react of a catholic when communicating with him about the issue of abortion, we can easily get the idea that they cannot tolerate any abortion at all as their religious belief system defines it as murdering. In a word, the act of ordinary people, in some respects, could be an indicator to the society's values and ideas.
However, there are some other reasons, beside society's values and ideas, which contribute to the differences in the appearance of people. For supporting example, one may look no further than the difference between dresses of people living in tropical areas, going with few clothes, and those living in frigid areas, with themselves bundling up. The main reason for this difference, rather than culture diversity, is weather. Another example to illustrate my viewpoint is those people who pay most of their daily time to working while have little time to relax. The financial pressure may be the overwhelming reason for the hard working as they may prefer to have more leisure time if they can afford the high expenses. Moreover, people living in area where wars break out from time to time are more likely to dress worse clothing as wars have broken the local economy, making them unable to afford good clothing, while cultural factors nearly have nothing to do with the selection of these people's dress. Having considering these, we can see that cultural factor is not the only factor influencing people's appearance.
In sum, I agree that under some circumstances, people's appearance could be an indicator of their society's values and ideas. On the other hand, there are other factors, including economy and climate, that affecting the choice of people's dress and act.
