Have you ever thought about the advantages that video camera brings while watching a football game on live? Though today's everyday life is linked with digital devices such as video camera to a large extent, few people may have considered the impact brought by the convenience of digital devices to the traditional form of documentation - written records. While taking advantages of the high-tech equipment we should realize the necessity to preserve the traditional one.
As a striking of example of the famous Darwin's theory, the trend that digital devices which content some remarkable advantages than the form of written records are going to replace paper works is inevitable. The most important feature of the new form of documentation is that video camera has the capability to record events by the form of images. As we all know, image is a form which is material and pellucid. Even illiteracies can watch TV to get information. Documentation with video camera enables our posterities to get the knowledge of how things are going on in our age concretely. Besides, the form of image makes the record accurate and convincing because video record is much more difficult to revise comparing with written records. Another striking advantage of documenting by video camera is that the information is compressed in a extremely high density. When comparing the library - with a huge building with a simple CD, one can easily tell the obvious convenience of digital devices such as video camera - they storage a large amount of information with a extremely small place.
However, it is some of the advantages of a video camera that on the contrary consist of the disadvantages. Since digital devices have a high density of information, once there is an accident - like a fire of earthquake, the lost will be extremely huge as well. Losing a CD sometimes means burning a whole library! Let alone the fact that today's storage medium is not safe enough. CDs, flash memories, and other devices used for storing digital information have limited lifetime compared with paper - the only medium used in the traditional way of documentation. Besides, digital devices such as video cameras often need accessory apparatus (e.g. a computer) which together will cost too much for some families under the poverty line.
It turns out that the traditional documenting method is irreplaceable. Regardless of its cheapness, the utilization of written records such as serving as commentaries is a necessary complement of the modern ways. A part of video record without written explanation of its theme will be easily forgotten about the contents. Besides, when recording some great events such as national motion, video camera will find itself helpless in depicting the whole scene.
Admittedly, it is a global trend that video camera and other digital devices will finally become predominant way of documentation, however, as a matter of fact, the right way of using those high-tech devices such as video cameras as documentation forms is to combine the advantages of new method and traditional ones together. With a beautiful scene recorded by video camera and lively commentary and explanation in written form the next generation will be able to know how their forebears are living.
In sum, I strongly agree with the state that the video camera provides such an accurate and convincing record of contemporary life that it has become a more important form of documentation than written records. Nevertheless, one can never ignore the great contribution of written records in recording history. A better combination of both the two method is the very way of documenting events objectively and visually.
