In modern society, with the improvement of ecnomic level, people attach more importance on arts which are their spirtual demands. There is no dengyin that arts connects with society deeply. As I perceive the issue, most arts indicate social emotion through paritcular expressions, while some of them not, they only want to creat their own arts, which is irrelevant or counterproductive to the society at their time.
As a threshold matter, arts are derived from human’s idea which is rooted in the society for every artists couldn’t live outside the society. Most outstanding artists have intuition to feel the society’s possible devloping trends they would reveal in their products rater than say it direclty to people. Perhaps individuals cannot understand their thought first because their thought and isnpirations couldn’t compete with the artists in some respects. Or perhaps their products displeased the government of that time.Nevertheless, they and their works would be approved by the society in the passing of time.It flies in my mind that many art works couldn't be recognized at first. Beethoven's early listeners, accustomed to the predictable harmonies and melodic lengths of Haydn, dismissed his symphonies as literally causing their ears to hurt. The French painter Honore Daumier, 法国现实主义讽刺画大师for instance, in the 1830s used his brush and pencil to protest political oppression. Daumier was imprisoned for his caricatures of the King. In fact, they were appreciated by latter people and proved to the society that their justification of the hidden ideas and impulses in their periods are right and proper.
However, some ideas and impulses which is obvious to people of that time could be conveyed by arts.In early 20th-century America, Theodore Dreiser 西奥多,德莱塞,美国小说家used the novel to point out the devastating loss of place experienced by workers who fled the rural for the opportunities of the city. Photographer Sherry Levine has used grotesque 奇异的images of women to protest the oppression of the female gender by American advertising, law, and social custom. They use an artistic means to voice their opinion about exisitng obviously iedas and impulses of the society which had been recognized by majority people.
Last but not least,Some art workds inflects the artists’ own thoughts and ideas but not society’s. Take Van Gogh as an example, his picture "the Starry Night" shows his love of life, and peace and pleasure gained from the world, which is merely an expression of his personal unique passion
rather than hidden ideas and impulses of a ociety. Another example about pop group-----“ westenlife” could prove the point either.Their represent song----- “the Rose”
just describes personal interpretation of love, which is irrelevant to the society. Such works is irrelevant with society’s ideas and impulses, let alone hidden ones.
For what has been discussed above, I agree with the speaker’s claim that” The arts reveals hidden ideas and impulses of a society”, however, when comes to the issue about
the arts’ expressive objects, “hidden ideas and implused” is only one of them. We should regard the statement in a comprehensive way.
