Issue 13 by suzie
As the lesser-known languages are being lost, is it the government’s duty to prevent the extinction?(我觉得本题的问题关键是:小语种是不是该被保护,而不是说责任在不在政府) From my perspective, it's necessary to protect the languages, but it may be too hardly for government to do this job.
First of all, we should make clear that why the lesser-known languages are dying out. As we all know, language is a tool for communication. When people have to exchange information with who speak other languages, there must be one side of them to compromise and learn the new language. However, the reality is that the people in the ascendant are often those who have an(不一定是一个,用some吧) advantage in economic, science or military. Now we can imagine how the disadvantaged groups compromised time and again, and then, it stands to reason that(还是why?我不太清楚,感觉why更合适吧) their mother tongue faced to the extinction. Actually, the phenomenon occurred in every period of history that cultural invasion leads to the faintish(为何查不到这个词?) culture's decline. Indian culture‘s transformation which the white man made(没错,改为made by he white man更好) is one powerful example. At the same time, a language's own faultiness may cause less people to use it, for its vocabulary and syntax can not meet the need of the complex communication.(由于词汇和句法并不是唯一的原因,为避免太绝对,所以我感觉这句话应改为:At the same time, a language's own faultiness, such as its vocabulary and syntax can not meet the need of the complex communication, may cause less people to use it.)
According to all the presentation above, the salvation of(加上lesser-known,显得更具体) languages is more like a duty which can hardly be completed for the local governments. Usually governments of the lesser-known languages speakers are not so(用that是否更好?) powerful; the governments are powerless to protect the language, even if they wanted to.(是否有点重复,整句话改为:Usually, governments of the lesser-known languages speakers are not that powerful to protect the languages, even if they wanted to.) For example, how can we require the Somalia government to protect
its endanger(用endangered) languages when most of its countrymen are in hungry.
And if the language itself is no longer applicable to the contemporary, the government is helpless as well. The Darwinian(可以这么用吗?) argument is applicable here, the extinction of the languages may be the result of "natural selection".
But on the other hand, terms of language, expression,(and) syntax develop from generation to generation, they have become part of intangible cultural heritage of all mankind. The disappearance of any language, whether to the nation who use such language, or the mankind as a whole, is a huge loss.
The disappearance of one language will make(force是否更有力?) us to say goodbye to a beautiful culture forever. So the languages should be protected, not by the local government but an organization just as the UNESCO, which can ignore(ignores) the political and economic factors. Or, we can pin our hope on the people's devotion on their own language, it(which) may be a better solution.
