Learning about life: by listening to advice of others or through personal experience?

Some people hold that listening to advices of others is a good way to learn about life. Others argue that the most beneficial way to learn is through personal experience. These two ways are needed for us to learn, we should practice all things by our own, in the mean time, family and friends' advices are useful for us to make a decision.
Firstly, most of time, we need to listen to others' advice when we are facing the choice. It's a common sense that anythings in this world have multiple facet so that we can't realize them only by one's perspective. Others' opinion of the same thing can help us to know it more clearly. For example, when we should choose an university to study abroad, most of people only want to choose the famous university because their reputation. They only see the one aspect of this university and neglect of the others aspect such as high tuition fee, excellent major and weather conditions and so forth. At that time, others' ideas for us to make a decision is very useful. However, if we often listen to the others, as time passed over and over years, we maybe lost our own judgement. So it's suitable for us to take others' advice as reference.
Secondly, learning by doing is best way for us because only when we experienced the actual situation, deepen understanding and innovation can be created. For instance, if you want to learn swimming, even though lots of books and others' advices come to you, you have never know how to swim without practice it. In addition, the essential of life is to experience. During the process of doing by your own, you enjoy the life. Anyway, learning by doing is an interesting and substantial way to acquire the actual and valuable knowledge. Of course, if you only focus on anythings by your own without anyone's comment and suggestions, it's easily for you to encounter the dilemma that hinder your progressing.
According to these facts mentioned above, I suggest that we should integrate these two ways into learning well. Different ideas of the same topic can make us more clever and deal with the things properly, but we can't only abide by the others' advice. Furthermore, as the word put it, "Practice is the sole criterion for testing truth." The best way to learn is do it by yourself.
