TOPIC: ARGUMENT65 - The following appeared in a memo from the president of a chain of cheese stores located throughout the United States.

"For many years all the stores in our chain have stocked a wide variety of both domestic and imported cheeses. Last year, however, the five best-selling cheeses at our newest store were all domestic cheddar cheeses from Wisconsin. Furthermore, a recent survey by Cheeses of the World magazine indicates an increasing preference for domestic cheeses among its subscribers. Since our company can reduce expenses by limiting inventory, the best way to improve profits in all of our stores is to discontinue stocking many of our varieties of imported cheese and concentrate primarily on domestic cheeses."

In this argument, the arguer concludes that the best way to improve profits in all of our stores is to discontinue stocking many of our varieties of imported cheese and concentrate primarily on domestic cheeses. To substantiate this conclusion, the arguer uses a fact and a survey to demonstrate that the domestic cheeses are more popular as well as an assumption that our company can reduce expenses by limiting inventory.

First of all, the fact that last year the five best-selling cheeses at our newest store were all domestic cheddar cheeses from Wisconsin can not make out that the domestic cheeses are more popular than imported ones throughout the United States. The flaws are obvious. Firstly, last year may just be a coincidence and can not represent the trend of future. Secondly, This happened only in one store so it does not mean that all the stores in our chain face the same situation. Thirdly, the five best-selling cheese were all from Wisconsin so there is a big chance that they were popular just because the certain fame instead of the fact that they were domestic cheeses. Finally, exact statistics have not been given so we can not know what a advantage domestic cheeses have comparing with imported ones in the store.

In addition, the survey by Cheeses of the world magazine is unconvincing ,either. The people surveyed may be the ones who originally have a special like for domestic cheeses so it does not indicate an increasing preference for domestic cheeses among all the customers. what's more, even if they prefer domestic cheeses, it does not mean they will go to buy the domestic ones Maybe because of the higher price. Besides, there is a potential possibility that the survey is manipulated by some domestic cheeses industries in private so the result is even unconvincing. So the arguer can not draw the conclusion that domestic cheeses are more popular that imported ones due to the two points above.

Finally, even if it is true that the domestic are more popular, we totally do not have to discontinue stocking many of our varieties of imported cheeses to improve profits. Although limiting inventory can reduce expenses, the imported cheeses may lead to more profits to
fill up the inventory expenses. And the domestic cheeses are more popular does not mean the imported ones can not be on sell at all. Furthermore, to discontinue stocking the imported cheeses may lead to some more problems such as influences on fame, loss of some international partners and so on. So to discontinue stocking the imported cheeses is not applicable.

To sum up, the conclusion lacks credibility because the evidence cited does not lend strong support to what the arguer maintains. To strengthen the argument, the arguer should provide some more convincing evidences concerning that the domestic cheeses are surely more popular than the imported one and the necessity to discontinue stocking the imported cheeses. Additionally, the survey conducted has to be more believable.

To substantiate this conclusion, the arguer uses a fact and a survey to demonstrate that the domestic cheeses are more popular as well as an assumption that our company can reduce expenses by limiting inventory. However, after a careful examination, the evidences are not persuasive enough and I will point out the fallacies next.
