The author asserts that in order to achieve success in any realm, practical actions is the only way rather than idealism. In my view, I tend to agree that pragmatic behavior guarantees survival and plays a significant role in promoting the development of the society. However, idealism also makes great contributions to the development of human beings and provides guide to practical actions. To achieve success, striking a balance between pragmatic behavior and idealism is critical.

On the one hand, I admit that it is pragmatic behavior that keep human beings living in the world well and promote the development of society. From the standpoint of the development of history, in ancient times when there was no definition of technology, politics, business, society, the only goal of our ancestors is to survive. They fought against the disaster of the nature, searched for foods and shelters for the only purpose of survival. At that time, ancestors did not know what idealism means. As the example mentioned above, anyone would not deny that it is pragmatic behavior that guarantees our ancestors' survival.

On the other hand, the development of society and human beings is not always based on pragmatic behaviors. Leo Tolstoy once said, "Ideal is the beacon; without ideal, there is no secure direction, and without direction there is no life". In the development of society, especially in areas of technology, idealism takes a significant part. Idealism, in most cases, provides impetus for the pursuing a better life of human beings. For example, from the standpoint of the development of human civilization, many ancient philosophers, for the purpose of pursuing the idealistic society, consistently think some recondite issues such as right of person, essence of society, value of an individual. As a result, some basic value and idea of modern society such as freedom, democracy, fairness should be ascribable to our ancients who devoted themselves to how to pursuit the idealistic society.

As I discussed above, I suppose that in order to make success, striking a balance between pragmatic behavior and idealism is the authentic way. Pragmatic plays a fundamental role in making success and it is the executor of achieving accomplishments. Idealism to some extent plays a critical role in providing a definite and meaning objective and impetus for actions. An appropriate combination of them guarantees success. For example, in realm of politics, for a successful leader, he or she must benefit the public through practical actions. Without pragmatic actions, no one would agree that he or she is a effective leaders; however, only benefiting the public through pragmatic actions is not enough. As a successful leader, he or she should give hope and dream to the public. For example, consider Martin Luther King, who is a spiritual leader of America. He not only benefited the public but also give spirits of freedom and democracy to the public. In short, both pragmatic behavior and idealism play a significant role in achieving accomplishments.

In sum, I tend to agree that it is pragmatic behavior guarantees survival and make great contributions to the development of society. However, idealism, that can provide a definite objective and inspire us, also plays a significant role in promoting the development of society. In final analysis, in order to make success, striking a balance between pragmatic behavior and idealism is critical.
