ISSUE130 - "How children are socialized today determines the destiny of society. Unfortunately, we have not yet learned how to raise children who can help bring about a better society."

Writing: (594 words)
The speaker’s claim is actually twofold: Firstly, he claims that it is children’s socialization which determines the destiny of society. Secondly, he points out that people have not learned how to raise children to better the society. In my opinion, both of the speaker’s opinions are one-sided.

Admittedly, children are known as the designer of the future, for the future depends on them to create when they grow up. They are compared to the “sunlight early in the morning”, full of energy and vitality, longing to lighten the world in the future. People are born as blank sheets, waiting for their parents as well as the society to make them colorful. What they’ve learned during the childhood greatly leads to how they will behave when they grow up, determining the destiny of the society.

Meanwhile, it is not only children’s socialization which determines the destiny of the society. Some other factors such as adults, science, morality also contributes a lot to the society. Every child was born equal, and it is the adults who should take the responsible of guiding them to build a better society. Hosea Ballou, a British educator, used to say “Education commences at the mother’s knee, and every word spoken within the hearsay of children tends towards the formation of character.” So adults also play an important role in determining the destiny of the society. Furthermore, we are living in a high-technology world. Without Thomas Edison, we might still live in a dark world; without the Wright brothers, space exploration still remains a dream. The development of the society greatly depends on the science technology. However, every coin has two sides. At the same time of bringing life comfortable, science can also destroy the society. Nuclear war can bring the whole world to an end in seconds. In order to avoid such disaster from happening, morality is very important. In those famous American movies, we can always find two sides of power: the power of justice and the side of evil. Only if children are guided to be virtuous can the society own a bright future.

The speaker’s next assumption is that we have not yet learned how to raise children to make a better society. In my opinion, it is not quite so. Undoubtedly, there still remains a lot to be improved in our current education system of children. For instance, schools and companies always judge a person’s ability by his school marks, leaving teachers and parents pay more attention on students’ marks instead of their overall abilities.

Meanwhile, the society has realized this misleading, and is making more and more efforts on developing children’s overall abilities. Students’ Unions at schools help children keep in touch with the outside society, and help them learn how to handle different kinds of people. Children can also colorful their life by entering Student’ Clubs, which enable them to further develop their hobbies. Schools also provide children with a lot of opportunities to do field works, enabling them to be more socialized, helping them easier entering into the society when they leave schools. Teachers not only teach students professional knowledge, but also guide them through their daily lives.

To make a conclusion, the speaker’s statement is unilateral, for the destiny of the society depends on far more factors than the children’s socialization. Elements such as science, adults and so on can also determine the future. Although we still need some improvement in the way of raising children, the society nowadays has already realized the importance of raising children to create a better society.
