I.  203 "The best way to understand the character of a society is to examine the character of the men and women that the society chooses as its heroes or its heroines." 533

According to this statement, the speaker claims that a society’s heroes and heroines (“heroes” hereafter) reflect its character and it is a best way to get to know the character of the society through them. I fundamentally agree with the speaker insofar as heroes are the heroes are someone with particular characters, selected and admired as the representative of the society. They always act as the model or idol of the society. Yet, strictly followed, in some cases, research on the heroes might get an inaccurate results and it is not always the best way of study society.

It would be tempting to support the speaker's claim that, examining the character of heroes may be an effective way to understand the society. It enables us to have an insight into the grand view of the whole society and the things they highly respect. First of all, heroes are amplified social characters whom we can easily get the round guess of the characters of the society through. Wallace, the hero of Scotland in the 12 century reveals the patriotism and braveness of the whole society. Secondly, heroes also indicate the certain virtues or needs cherished by the whole society. Such like Nelson Mandela, the South African black political leader, devoting whole life to fight against racial oppression in South Africa, is considered as a national hero there.

However, at most of the time heroes mirror the corresponding society’s character, on some occasion that might be opposite. The hero nominated by the despotic government cannot properly stands for its society. He is just a marionette by means of which the government can easily drive social opinions to meet minority’s interests. The real character of the society is disguised under this circumstance. Adolf Hitler was deified as the national hero of Germany during the WWII for his boldness, extreme-nationalism and aggression to revival the Germanic. If we conclude the whole German society through the study of him, we will never find that the society is actually misleading by Nazi Government. Moreover, the definition of “Hero” is becoming multiple before, and each one might have conflicting characters. One society may have more than 10 heroes of diverse fields such as sports heroes, military heroes, and so forth. And this, undoubtedly, increase the barriers to study of the society.

On the other hand, despite of examining heroes there’s a lot of other successful ways to study the character of a society. It is not difficult to find out numerous sociological books written from other aspects like history, legal system, literature, or even religious belief of one society. The famous book <Chrysanthemum and the Sword> written by Ruth Benedic insightfully analysis the Japanese society without study on certain heroes.

In the final analysis, it is so hasty for the speaker to draw the conclusion that study the heroes are the best way to understand a society on the feeble basis that part of the heroes reflect the society’s character. Because the heroes who are not naturally generated from society are not convincingly typical, and diversely characterized heroes may confuse the study of society. Also, the study of society can be well perfect by the help of study on other social aspects.

165 The following appeared in a business magazine.

The author concludes that the cans of tuna produced by Promofoods do not contain chemicals which may threaten consumers’ health. To substantiate this argument, the author cites the evidence that the five out of eight chemicals which may cause dizziness and nausea were not found in the recalled cans. And the rest 3 suspected chemicals are naturally seen in other canned foods. However, the argument suffers from several critical flaws, which render it unconvincing.

To begin with, the 3 suspected chemicals cannot be proved safe on the basis that they also commonly occur in other canned foods. No reliable information about the quantity of the 3 chemicals in products of Promofoods is shown in this article. If the contained 3 chemicals are highly unattained, the canned tuna may also cause such symptoms, and this fact would seriously weaken the author’s claim that the caned tuna of Promofoods are safe. Also, apart from the 8 chemicals blamed for causing dizziness and nausea, the interaction of other chemicals in the canned tuna may possibly contribute to such symptoms. Lacking the evidence that all the chemicals in the canned tuna are safe, the author cannot harshly make the conclusion that the canned tuna is safe.

Moreover, the author overlooks the strong possibility that the tested samples may not scientifically selected. It is entirely possible that the tested samples are not representative of the whole products. According to the article, the Promofoods recalled 8 millions products for testing last year. However, there’s no information to indicate the way by which the tested cans are selected, and it is unreasonable to draw such conclusion about the whole recalled products based on the limited samples.

Finally, the author fails to convince us with the test report provided by chemists of Promofoods. It is difficult to judge the objectivity of the result of the test as the testers are all hired by Promofoods. It is highly possible that in order to meet the interests of the company, they feigned the test results to attests the safety of the products.

In sum, this article is unpersuasive as it stands. To bolster it the author must show the detailed chemical composition of the caned tuna, the way by which the chemists select the test samples, and maybe a test report provided by the third party.

According to this statement, the speaker claims that a society’s heroes and heroines (“heroes” hereafter) reflect its character and it is a best way to get to know the character of the society through them. I fundamentally agree with the speaker insofar as heroes are the heroes are (笔误,多打了?) someone with particular characters, selected and admired as the representative of the society. Yet, strictly followed, in some cases, research on the heroes might get an inaccurate results and it is not always the best way of study society.

However, there’s no information to indicate the way by which the tested cans are selected, and it is unreasonable to draw such conclusion about the whole recalled products based on the limited samples
Finally, the author fails to convince us with the test report provided by chemists of Promofoods. It is difficult to judge the objectivity of the result of the test
as the testers are all hired by Promofoods. It is highly possible that in order to meet the interests of the company, they feigned the test results to attests the safety of the products.
